Getting Links to open on new window
-
I’m probably just being dumb and have completely missed a simple instruction somewhere, but how can I get the links I have set up in the sidebar using widgets to open in a new window? The ones I have on static pages and in posts all seem to open in a new window.
The links i am referring to are the image based ones under Sponsors, Forum and the Flickr link.
Many thanks in advance.
Fiona

The blog linked to your name does not seem to have a Forum or flicker link – we need a link to the blog you are asking about to give you accurate advice.

Your username links to the blog you’ve set it to in Users > Personal Settings. The blog URL you give when starting a thread here doesn’t show up: it’s only used to trigger an auto-response when users post in these forums although they have a self-hosted blog. So when your questions don’t refer to the blog your username links to, you must include the URL of the blog in question in the text you type.
The Flickr widget and the Image widget don’t have an option for making the links open in a new browser window or tab. Instead of Image widgets, you can use code in a Text widget. See here:

Many thanks – that worked perfectly.
Is there any way I can change the colour of the text in a text widget? I’d like the links in the Sponsors text widget to show as red. I appreciate they turn red when you hover the mouse over them but it would be good if they were red constantly.

If you are expecting to be able to click a button and change fonts throughout your blog, link colors and hover colors on links then it’s not that easily done.
These are 3 ways to change fonts on WordPress.com blogs. Note the note found in (3) is for you are asking to do.
(1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/
(2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2
(3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
Note: Any font changes to font families, colors and size in the blog title, tagline, post titles, page titles, categories and tags, widget headings, and links cannot be done without CSS editing.

Thank you Timethief. That is pretty much what I thought.
I am aware that all these newbie questions must frustrate the **** out of you experts, but in your Note to (3) above you seem to be implying that link colours cannot be changed except through CSS editing. Is that correct? I ask because I seem to have managed previously to change links colours in my static pages using the visual editor method. Or did you mean you cannot change the colours of links attached to widgets?

Without a design upgrade you can’t change the colors of links in widgets.
But you can change link colors in each post by typing your link name in the visual editor, highlighting it, choosing a color, then adding your link.
in html it might look sort of like this:
<a title="whatever" href="http://THE LINK HERE"><span style="color: #ff00ff;">LINK_NAME_YOU_TYPE</span></a> -
sorry
Without a design upgrade you can’t change the colors of links in widgets.
not globally or for your entire blog…
