Getting many Spam New User registrations

  • Unknown's avatar

In the last 24-36 hours, I’ve started getting an average of 1 new user registration every 20 minutes. They all have a name that ends in ‘…ORDITODER’. Any idea how I can stop these spambots?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Will you please remove the inappropriate tags in the sidebar? I posted the only ones that are relevant.

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any pending email subscriptions in your account. Have you deleted them again?

It’s most likely that someone is typing your email address into the Follow Blog widget on other sites. Why people do that only they know, but this happens sometimes. We have no way to prevent it, though. That’s why we send a confirmation email instead of just subscribing you to the site.

If you ignore the emails and don’t delete the pending subscriptions, they will stop the moment you reach our cap for pending subscriptions. Otherwise, you can also block notification emails from us via your account settings.

    kokkieh,

I believe the problem is two-fold.

    1. The blog owner is getting spam subscriptions.
    2. And in my case my personal email is being used to create the spam subscriptions. It appears a bot is creating these spam subscriptions. wmamurphy might be receiving a subscription once every 20 minutes. And I’m being subscribed at just under 30K over the last 24 hours.

Here is some info from Gmail Support on the issue:

    Frustrating on all sides.

And I’m being subscribed at just under 30K over the last 24 hours.

I can see that about 50 subscription confirmation emails were sent to you by our system over the past two days, but it’s quite impossible that you’d receive 30 000 emails from us over 24 hours, as the number of pending subscription you can have is capped at under a 100. Once you hit that cap no one would be able to subscribe you to any further sites.

If you’ve received that amount of emails, they’re not coming from us.

I realise this is frustrating, but there’s nothing we can do except to completely block your account from subscribing to new sites. This will also block you from receiving new post notifications from any sites where you are already subscribed.

You can change that setting at the link I gave above.

Hi there, the original poster mentioned New User registrations, so somehow I don’t think this is the WordPressdotcom site you are looking for. :) Their WordPressdotcom site has one “Hello World” post from July 2009. I’m going to take a wild guess and say this is a WP.ORG issue since there is an ORG site at wamcamera.com

Mentioning the actual site you need help with really helps everyone point you in the right direction for assistance. For help with sites using the standalone WP software> https://wordpress.org/support You can register a username account on that page if you don’t have one.

WordPressdotcom (where we are) and standalone WP (org) are different entities. More about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
