Couldn’t agree with you more! I don’t mind the fact that the tags and cats go global. The big reason I am dwelling on this so much is the fact that I’m sure there are people out there that were like myself before I signed up for wordpress.com at the end of April who have never visited a wordpress.com blog before. It would be nice to be able to have your blog listed in the global tags but not have it linked to them.

It would be nice to have PR people spreading the word about your blog all over the papers and television, and not have to pay them anything. The link-back is currency in the blog world, and the blog world is entirely give to get. If you want a link from them, link to them. The Global Tag system is the very best example of this online.
Think about that PR metaphor. It fits exactly.

When you list a blog in a free blog Directory you will find that almost every one of them require that you also provide a link (reciprocal link) on your blog back to them.
