Getting my blog published (publicly accessible on internet)
-
I have gone through the WordPress tutorial, and set up the basic structure of my website/blog. I have six pages, all of which I have ‘published’. But I cannot access my website publicly, and my friend could not also access it when I asked if they could check.
I have registered a specific domain name, which is hosted by cheapdomains.com.au. They have mapped it so that it will forward to my wordpress site. I have also mapped my wordpress domain to go to my .com website.
This is the current mapping:
(Cheapdomains)
DNS Service
App Setup | Web Forward | Email Forward | RecordsWeb Forwards http://www.hilarymanning.com › http://hilarymanning.wordpress.com Modify
hilarymanning.com › http://hilarymanning.wordpress.com Modify
(Email from Cheapdomains – is there a redirect loop problem?)
We have re-setup the connection of your domain as we have detected a redirect loop in your domain. Please make sure that you have not created any domain forwarding in your account with wordpress to avoid this loop.
Please give it another 2-4 hours to be able to see the website and please do not forget to publish your website from your wordpress account.(WordPress domain mapping)

Forwarding and mapping are different things. Did you purchase the domain mapping upgrade from WordPress.com? It will not work until you do.

Thanks for your help!
Yes, I did, and I just went back to re-confirm that I had (Yes, I have the receipt, the debit on my bankcard, and it’s listed in My Upgrades).
My Upgrades, Domain Mapping, I have just discovered says: ‘DNS needs to be updated’.
Would this be the problem? What does this mean and how do I fix it?
Thank you!! H

Yes, that is the problem. Here are the instructions.

Thank you again.
I have already mapped my domain http://www.hilarymanning.com to My Domains. This now shows up as my Primary Domain in the My Domains section.
I don’t have an email address attached to it, so there should be no need to edit DNS records for that.
But to edit DNS records for my primary domains, I cannot find the Domain Management/Edit DNS menu on my site.
I’m reading through the Custom DNS support website, just without this menu, I can’t do what it suggests
I’m sorry, I would love this to be straightforward for me!

Thanks! Problem all solved now!
As it turned out, my domain was mapped incorrectly. I cancelled the domain, and re-mapped it correctly. Which meant that I could then access the Edit/Domain Management menu. And then from there correctly update my DNS Server, both with WordPress and with my registrar. My website went live this morning!
Thank you – really helpful!
