Getting my custom domain name back after cancellation?

  • Unknown's avatar

I cancelled my domain upgrade within two days of registering/purchase. I did this because I want to transfer to a self-hosted server (actually, there’s no content in my blog yet, so I was expecting to just start over). Can I get my domain name back for use on a self-hosted WordPress site?

  • Hi,

Domain names cancelled within the first 48 hours are held by the domain registrar for about five days before returning to the market, so you have two options:

    1. Wait for 5 days to pass, then register it anew on the registrar of your choice.
    2. We can request that the domain registrar returned to your account.

The advantage of the first is that you’re not tied to using WordPress.com as your registrar for any amount of time (you can still use your domain anywhere—you don’t have to use WordPress.com for your site, only that we’ll be the ones you go to for domain management).

The advantage of the second is, if we can retain it, you won’t have to worry about someone else buying it between the time it returns to the market and when you actually make the new purchase.

Let me know which you’d rather do!

    Cheers!

Thanks for the fast response. I’m going to self-host a WordPress.org site through Bluehost. Would the second option allow me to initiate that Bluehost account using this existing domain name? And, following registration, would it be simpler for future management if I were to transer the domain to them?

  • You can use the domain on Bluehost. I’m not familiar with their sign-up process, but I know you can start an account with them without purchasing a domain.

Long-term, it is probably simpler to have the domain registered through them.

There is a solid argument that you should register your domain elsewhere in case something happens to Bluehost and there is an extended outage, you can still point your domain somewhere else. For a mission-critical business website, that’s something to be considered. The average personal site is typically okay just to stick with simple. :-)

    Cheers!

Okay. Sounds like I’ll want to go with option 2. What’s the time frame for returning the custom domain to my account (presumably as an “upgrade”)?

  • I’m sending the note to the registrar now to try to reclaim the domain. If we get it, I’ll let you know and send you a payment request to offset the refunded transaction.

Typically, they respond within a day. I’ll let you known as soon as I do. :-)

    Cheers!

    Thanks again. Much appreciated!

  • Hi there!

Good news: our registrar was able to “rescue” this domain from deletion! Before I can re-add it to your account, you’ll need to pay the normal domain registration fee here:

    https://manualpayments.wordpress.com/?u=16939097fd

Let me know when that’s done and I can re-attach the domain to your account. :)

After that, you’ll be able to point it to BlueHost with this guide:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

I hope this helps – let me know if you have any more questions!

Manual payment has been completed! Please go ahead and reattach the domain to my account, then I’ll try restablishing the site through Bluehost.

  • Hi!

The domain tynaontko.com has been re-added to your account:

This guide will show you how to point it to another host:
