Getting New Themes And Applying Them

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a blog account at wordpress.com but when I go to the appearance settings it say I have about 78 or 79 themes to choose from but I just discovered more themes out there. How do apply these new themes I have seen at the themes page when I need to change the blog look? Do I need to know programming code or can I just apply them easy like how I do in my appearance account settings page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t. The themes you see “out there” are all coded to run on wordpreas.org software and cannot be uploaded into wordpress.com blogs. wordpress.com blogs do not have FTP access and we cannot upload themes or plugins. We can only use the themes we find here > Appearance > Themes. If we are adept at CSS editing then we can purchase a CSS upgrade and change the appearance of our blogs by editing the CSS stylesheets by we cannot access or edit the underlying templates and change functionally in any way.

Please read this so you are clear on the fact that wordpress.com and wordpress.org run on different software http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

What you need to do is learn to search the forum before asking questions, as your question (like most questions) has been answered countless times. In a wp.COM blog you can only use one of the themes available under Appearance>Themes (currently 80). Those other themes “out there” are for wp.ORG blogs – see the stickies up top on the main page of this forum.

As you are new I’m going to post another link from the support documentation. wordpress.com is a multuser blogging platform. All bloggers here using the same theme are actually using the same templates. If one of us could access the underlying template and edit the php or html all blogs with the same theme would be likewise affected.

wordpress.org software is free standing and available free of charge to anyone who asks for it. What’s required is the purchase of a domain and the hiring of a web host. wordpress.org blogs do have FTP access and plugins and new themes can be uploaded into them.

Also because wordpress.com is a multiuser blogging platform security is priority number one. That means that there are restrictions on embeds, iframes, flash, javascript, etc. and if we try to post code for them the wordpress.com software will strip it out to preserve security.
