Getting ‘Oops that Page cannot be found’ error
-
when i copy and paste in my blog’s home page or i send a link to folks i get this message. Also it says ‘It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below… well the links to my pages do work (i.e. about, contact, etc). I tried researching this issue but none of the solutions worked (settings – permalinks).. I have the free version of wordpress. My site’s home page is:
I appreciate the help!

https://play2windotblog.wordpress.com/ seems to be just fine, so maybe the link was mistyped?
-
staff-blorbo I’ve noticed a few times recently that staff don’t appear to see the
Oops! That page can’t be found.
that I see when there have been a few similar threads to this one. Perhaps the home page isn’t set as the blog page? Is this some new change to the previous default setting when people create new sites?

Oh, thanks for the nudge! @themagicrobot
@playtovictory I see the problem now. In your front page settings https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#2-set-a-static-front-page you have selected for a static home page to appear instead of your posts, but you have not chosen a page for the home page. -
@themagicrobot I do sometimes see things about “Nothing found” if the person doesn’t have any posts at all, but the page is set up to display posts in one way or another.
This site does have posts though and I can’t seem to figure out where the “nothing found” would be coming from, unless it’s a mistyped URL.
Sometimes people will see it too if they publish a post, then change the date or title after Twitter and Facebook links have gone out — basically the old link stops working, so they’ll get a “nothing found” if they click the old link.
@playtovictory could you please confirm what link you’re clicking when you see the error? Please copy and paste it here and we’ll investigate. -
Just clicking on the site URL and I see

It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?

Ohhhh okay, we weren’t seeing that — just a normal list of posts — but if I log out or use an incognito window, I do see what you mean.
@playtovictory, I dug around a bit and I think I see the issue. Please go to My Site > Design > Customize > Front Page Settings.
Right now, you have a static homepage picked, but … the page you were using was apparently deleted some time after that.
So, you can specify a different homepage there, or you can choose to display posts. Whichever works best for you. If you need more help, let us know.
Thanks @themagicrobot for pushing back on this! I’m not sure why my admin access was showing me the posts page, but I’ll see if I can dig into that a bit so we don’t miss it next time!

@supernovia You’re welcome. I’ve noticed a few similar instances recently where staff reply saying they see a site displaying correctly whilst we mere mortals don’t. How odd! A deleted page would explain the “Oops!” message though…..
-
Ok. I updated the static component to use Home and I am not getting the error. I will repost if issues. Thanks everyone!

@themagicrobot, if you happen to have any handy threads where we were not seeing Page Not Found but the users were, or if you run into any again that we miss, would you mind getting in touch with us with links? I tried to duplicate this but couldn’t, so we’ll need to do more digging. Just in hopes of preventing that kind of confusion in the future.
I’d think ideally, the posts page should display if the front page is deleted, and in my testing that’s what I got. So I’m not sure why that wasn’t happening here, yet. But hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out with more examples.

I’ve seen this complaint a lot recently too. I think that it’s popping up most for sites created with one of the newer * Business themes, which set a static page as home initially. Then that’s deleted and they write blog posts, but the homepage setting has yet to be changed.
-
Hm, that’s possible, there is something slightly different to their new site flows.
Thanks for the idea!
