Getting permission

What is the general rule of when using photos in your post? If say for instance I wanted to use professional wedding photography do I have to get permission from the photographer? If I do a “style watch” and ask people if I could take their picture and feature them on my blog should I have them sign a consent form or waiver?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Copyright law requires that you obtain permission from the photographer.

Creative Commons photos allow reuse under certain conditions – you don’t need to ask permission for those because you already have it.

If you’re talking about photos where you are the photographer, you don’t generally need permission from the people in the photograph if you’re publishing it for editorial use – that is, most purposes except for advertising. But if you’re serious about photography it can be a good idea to get written permission from your subjects — it’s much easier to do it when you take the photo than to track someone down later. Google “photography model release” for more info.
