Getting plugins on my site

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been using wordpress.com for some time now to do a free blog.

It has got to the stage where I want to edit it a bit more, add in some additional features and I have seen some plugins that could make this happen.

I recently purchased the domain burgerjournal.co.uk from godaddy and had no problem going into wordpress and re-directing my old burgerjournal.wordpress.com to my new domain.

I do not want to lose any data, and still want to be able to use the wordpress dashboard, but have the added plugin feature.

My question is, is there a step-by-step guide of how to do this because I really can’t find anything.

Any help would be much appreciated (I can’t stress enough how new this is to me so be gentle), :)

  • While plugins are common on self hosted WordPress sites, due to security concerns, they are not available on WordPress.com. There is more info regarding WordPress.com and plugins here:

    Plugins

However, we do have several built-in features that were inspired by many popular plugins. You might find what you want by searching for it at http://en.support.wordpress.com/

What feature are you looking to add with a plugin?

    Thank you for responding.

The plugins I am after vary but one example is that I would like a scrolling bar at the top of my homepage displaying my recent posts.

I know that there is a large library of plugins that can be downloaded and ideally, this is what I would like to get for my site – how would I go about this?

I have seen details that explain how plugins are unavailable on wordpress.com but as my site grows, I would like the ability to change the way my site looks – at the moment, I like the way wordpress works but I just want the plugins button so I can be a bit more creative.

    Thanks again

  • The short answer is that, if your site plans require plugins, you will need to look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress site using the software found on WordPress.org.

Should you decide to go that direction, this guide will step you through the process of moving your blog to a self-hosted instal:
