Getting rid of the default double-spacing?

Title says it all. Is there any way to get rid of the default double-spacing when entering in a new line of text? Perhaps change it to single-space? It’s driving me up a wall, to put things delicately.

I should add, any way to preserve additional spacing would work just as well. Formatting poetry is a chore when tab indent is out of commission and WordPress has a habit of reverting extraneous spaces into one space.

The only way to change the spacing is to press enter and shift at the same time. (Thanks to Timethief for that hint)

Hmm…I was hoping there was another way. The problem is, while enter + shift does make a single space, technically the text is still connected as part of the same paragraph – so if I wanted to try indenting a specific line, it would indent the entire piece.

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.
If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/09/13/wordpress-formatting-and-spacing/
P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

From quickly skimming over HTML tag tables, can I safely assume that there is no tag for indents?

Awesome. One last question, and I’ll be out of your guys’ hair – I’ve noticed that entering text in preformatted mode places it into a light gray box. Is there any way to get rid of this?

Actually, disregard that last question. After a little more tinkering I figured out that I don’t actually need to go into preformatted to employ HTML. (Obvious answer is, alas, painfully obvious.)

“I figured out that I don’t actually need to go into preformatted”. Right. It can produce various undesirable side effects. Better avoid using it and learn to use inline CSS.
