Getting rid of the dropdowns on top?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I use the Columnist theme. Pages are piled up on top by the titles (or whatever they’re called) and Posts are in the graphic tiles below. What I’m trying to do is this: I really don’t want to see the top part, or stacked pages with drop downs, but want to primarily use the graphic tiles below. Catch is the only way for me to do that is to either:

    1. Build the page, then assign a graphic to the post, and when people click on the graphic of the post, then have a second link directing them to the page (NOT good)

    2. or: Build the page as an EXACT duplicate in content, which means I have to always do 2 of them and update 2 of them (NOT good.)

    My current solution is here: the main site is 91709.info (domain I use), which is actually a page in and of itself. I literally built it so the graphic icons directly go to the content, and there is nothing on top. Of course I ate the little home button that messes things up once ion a while when people go there, so try it so you see what happens.

    Is there any other way? Am I able to use another theme (there are some I like, say PUZZLE) but implement it where clicking on the picture graphic gets me to a page, and I want the TOP part where all the stacked drop downs disappear?

    And since I’ve paid for a few things, can’t remember, are those transferable to another theme, or am I stuck in paying again?

    Thanks. Jack

    Hey Jack,

    Let me first clarify what you’re looking for so I know that we’re on the same page. Instead of having the page titles appear at the top as they are now, you would like a set of images on your home page that link to the individual pages. Is that correct?

    If so, there really isn’t an easy way to do that. You could need to start with the instructions here on adding a static front page:

    Set the Homepage

    Then, you would need to manually add the image in a grid format.

    There are themes that have a similar format like Puzzle:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/puzzle/

    However, those blocks link to posts, not pages. Main difference is you would need to create a post for the block to appear.

    Another theme that might work is Edin:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/edin/

    It has three set boxes below the main image that can be linked to specific pages. Would that work?

    And since I’ve paid for a few things, can’t remember, are those transferable to another theme, or am I stuck in paying again?

    If you just install a new theme on your blog, you shouldn’t need to do anything with the upgrades as they’re attached to your blog, not your theme.

    If you’d like to transfer upgrades to another blog you own, you can do that following the instructions here:

    Jeremy,

    Sorry it took a few days. Finally had a chance to look it all over. All this time I’ve already built a static page without even knowing what I was doing. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Problem solved! Happiness Engineer you are.

    Wonderful Jack! Please let me know if you need anything else.

    Hi Jeremy,

    I do have a follow up question. My current theme looks a little strange, only using 2/3 of the left side of the screen on a laptop, and not the best look on mobile devices.

    I do like Pictorino, or other similar graphic looking themes.

    Main Question: Please take a look on how my site looks now at 91709.info. Is there some way to close the gap between the graphics I put up, both between them vertically & horizontally from row to row?

    Secondary: If I went with a different theme, and similarly use a static page, do they all look like the columnist static page?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Jack,

    Is there some way to close the gap between the graphics I put up, both between them vertically & horizontally from row to row?

    Can you explain exactly what graphics you’re referring to? Are you referring to these graphics?

    Each theme is going to look a bit different. The best way to see what a theme is going to look like would be to view the demo on the theme. You can find the demo by clicking “Live Demo” after highlighting a theme here:

    Hi, Yes, those are the graphics. I know how to try the other themes, but since it’s NOT the default page, I’m not able to really see what it’ll look like. Tried it a few times actually…

    Hey Jack!

    The easiest way to alter the spacing of your images would be to use CSS. You could use something like the following:

    img.alignleft {
    margin: 5px 5px 5px 0;
    }

    Just input that under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS and edit the px values to achieve the look you’re going for. Please note, this would require the Custom Design upgrade, which is part of our Premium bundle:

    http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/

    Since you already have two upgrades included in the bundle, it might make sense to make the switch. In addition to 10GB of space and No Ads, you would also get the VideoPress and Custom Design bundles as well as a free domain.

    I know how to try the other themes, but since it’s NOT the default page, I’m not able to really see what it’ll look like.

    Ah – got it. Rather than previewing the live demo of a theme then, I would suggest searching for a theme here:

    https://locksinajam.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php

    Then, you can use the “Preview” function to see how the theme would look on your site!
