getting rid of ugly empty space on Quintus when using custom banner

First of all, the information in the help files is wrong. The custom banner size is NOT 1100×250. I had to shrink my banner down to about 1030 and it barely fit. And there is now an ugly empty space above my banner. How can I remove it without having to start over again and blindly guess what the Quintus banner height is?

The information is correct. The theme is semi-responsive: it shrinks to fit lower resolution screens. You probably have a 1024px wide screen; this gives you the impression that the image had to be narrower than the recommended width but you’re wrong. Here’s a screenshot of the result you produced (my screen is wide enough to display the theme in its maximum width):
