Getting rights to a domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

it looks like someone has registered the domain name for my company but I’m not sure, its alyssumalchemy.com.au it says its already registered. is there any way I can get the rights to this domain name? It’s possible I registered it but can’t remember. Any way you can find out who owns it?

    Thanks

All blogs belong to people who create a username account and register the blog. In order to help you get access to your blog Staff need one of the following things in order to correctly identify you as the blog owner:

    1. an email from the email address associated with the account or revealing what that associated email address was
    2. the wordpress.com API key for your account. This was included in your welcome email with a note to keep it safe. Please do not post the API key here.
    3. if you have purchased any upgrades for the blog a transaction number

You will need Staff help and I have flagged this thread for their attention. Please be patient while waiting.

The actual domain (alyssumalchemy.com.au) shows as available at http://whois.ausregistry.net.au/whois/whois_check.jsp?tab=0

But I’m not sure if that relates to whoever may be using it at WordPress.

Indeed, alyssumalchemy.com.au appears to be available as I am typing this response.

If you’d like to use it with your WordPress.com site, you will need to register it with any registrar (here at WordPress.com, we only provide registration for .com, .net, .org and .me domain names). Then, you can purchase a Domain Mapping upgrade (under Store > Domains) to map this domain name to your site (I’ve already added a zone record for alyssumalchemy.com.au so you don’t need to worry about it).

Thanks to everyone who has responded and assisted. Really appreciate it. Jenia I actually did pay for the $99 upgrade, but this was where I hit a problem as when I tried to include the .com.au it said it was already registered, but i see now (and this was my suspicion) that it actually just wasn’t compatible with wordpress. So if I buy the domain name at something like hostgater or godaddy or something similar? If once I map this under my domain name does this mean if people type in .com.au for my address they will be automatically directed to my wordpress.com site?

Really appreciate everyone’s help. This is a nice crew at wordpress! :)

  • Yes, we can’t register .com.au domain, but if you register it elsewhere, you can map it here following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You have already used your bundle’s domain credit to register alyssumalchemy.com, so mapping a .com.au domain would be an additional $13/year charge.

You’ll need to find somebody that handles .au domains. The ones you mentioned might. I really don’t know.
