Getting "Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons." for .mp4

  • Unknown's avatar

I have uploaded .mp4 files successfully before, but now I get “Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.” Please help.

I’m having exactly the same issue but with .m4v – worked fine before, but today I’m now getting the security error. Can’t figure out what the issue is :(

I just deleted an .mp4 file that was uploaded last year. The upload of the exact same file just failed with the security reasons message. What’s up?

  • Hi there,

The WordPress software recently had a security patch that enforces stricter validation of media files to prevent people uploading files containing malware by just changing the file extension to that of an accepted file type. This has the side-effect of blocking some actual video files as well that use Flash encoding, as Flash is often used to insert malware into websites.

Can you please upload the files to another file sharing service like Cloudup or Google Drive and reply with a link I can use to download those? Then we can check on our end if there’s a problem with those files.

I can delete the links from your replies the moment I’ve downloaded the files, so other people won’t be able to download them as well, if you’re concerned about that.

The file was created with CyberLink PowerDirector 14, with settings Apple, iPod/iPhone, MPEG-4 1920 x 1080/30p (15 Mbps), with Fast video rendering technology (Intel Quick Sync Video). Video Codec = MPEG-4 AVC, Audio Codec AAC.

Let me know if you need any additional information.

  • Thanks for the file.

I’m not able to upload it either, so I’ve given it to our developers to look at.

  • @waynelmiller3

Can you please try again? You should now be able to upload that file. If it still fails, please try clearing your browser cache and cookies.

    @rachelemmaweaver

Can you also please try again? If it still fails for you, please send me the file as requested above so we can take a look.

I was able to upload two files. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks.

  • Thanks for confirming :)

    Hi,
I’m experiencing the same problem but on a hosted 4.6.2 install.
It was fine weeks ago but today it says:
“Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.”
It’s an MP4 created with CyberLink PowerDirector 14.
I even tried uploading the default WMV file that comes with Windows 7 (wildlife) – WordPress blocks that too.

I appreciate it’s differently hosted, but please could you help with what could be the issue? What did your developers find?

    Thank you,
    Jon

  • @jon29blog

If you’re on 4.6 I doubt it’s the same issue, as this security patch was released in 4.7.1 for self-hosted sites. I know the developers on Core are working on this issue, but there’s a plugin available that helps get around it at the moment:

    Disable Real MIME Check

If that plugin doesn’t work for you, you’ll need to ask in the self-hosted forums for help, as we don’t have access to your site and nothing we can do here on WordPress.com will have any effect on how this works on your end.

I would recommend updating to WordPress 4.7 :)

    Hi Kokkieh,
    Thanks for your help.
I would like to update to 4.7.1. but SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle hasn’t been validated for it – I guess I’m stuck until then? Or is it safe to update anyway?

As for the MP4 – I re-encoded it with VLC and it uploads fine. Seems WordPress doesn’t like CyberLink PowerDirector MP4s. But now, the VLC MP4 stutters and judders :-(

I’ll play around with another encoder and look in the support of the link you supplied.

    Thanks,
    Jon

That’s something you need to ask SiteOrigin support, or the users in the self-hosted forums might be able to tell you.

That’s also something you’ll need to ask about in the self-hosted forums. We use a completely different version of WordPress here on WordPress.com and the two versions don’t work the same in many respects.

Thank you kokkieh for explaining the differences and for pointing me in the right direction :-)

Just to let you know, I used Handbrake – https://handbrake.fr/ – to convert the MP4. The new video uploaded fine and plays smooth. At least I found a workaround :-)

    Cheers,
    Jon

  • Excellent! I’m glad to hear you found something that works. I’ll bookmark that for my own future reference.
