Getting Started

Long story short, I’m the current webmaster for a nonprofit I belong to, with no webmaster experience. I know the ins and outs of computers pretty well, (though no coding exp). Our current/old webmaster is slowing down, and wanting to stop managing the site.

I built myself a couple websites back in 2012 with Weebly, but have forgotten how to do things, so I’m back at the very beginning. Even forgetting everything, it still puts me ahead of everyone else in the nonprofit when it comes to updating and maintaining the website they currently have, as most of them struggle to get their computer/phone to function correctly.

I’ve been given permission to edit our site, but I want to build a similar looking site before I tackle the already established site, so if errors or unseen situations pop up, I have a site I can troubleshoot on/test new things out on first. Our current site is a wordpress.org site hosted through Bluehost.

I haven’t used WordPress before, so I’m a little lost and overwhelmed with everything.

I have a few questions, and apologies if the answers are already out there, but being able to ask and being directed to the answer helps me process things a bit easier.

    1. Where exactly is the best place to start learning what I need to know? There seems to be a few places that have a “start here” vibe or button.

    2. Can I set up a “test” site on wordpress.com that basically mirrors our site so I test/troubleshoot separately —- does it need to be on wordpress.org?

    3. Is the layout of wordpress.org the same as wordpress.com

    Thank you for your help!
