Getting started
-
I’m brand new at this. I’ve can’t seem to create a beginning page to get started. Everything keeps disappearing or relocating to the widget pasture on my computer, which is so full, right now, that it’s a jumble jungle! I have a domain name and have signed up to WordPress. What now? Susan

Right now, I just have a domain name, which will be my blog address, airingabuse.com. How do I include a link to a blog that doesn’t yet exist?

airingabuse
Do not put your email address out in a public forum.
Also, did you read the second post in this thread?
It appears that you have a blog using wordpress.org software, with hosting paid for by you. You seem to be in the wrong forum.Again, read this:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1If you do have a wordpress,COM blog, we need a direct link, starting with http://

Hi Susan, I’ve deleted your email address from your post for your security and freedom from spam :)

Why do automatically generated ” possibly related posts” appear on my blog?
-
Your blog looks fine. (just me, but orange is not my favorite color, but that’s just me…)
The possibly related posts are meant to generate hits from other blogs, sites, etc which have the same tags / cats as you are writing about. Sometimes it works, sometimes umm… not so much.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/related-posts/I’ve no experience with domain mapping so we can hope someone with more knowledge will pick up this thread. Here is documentation from support, and perhaps that’s helpful.

So there are some things that you are not an expert on!! Thanks for the links, tho. It’s the Halloween spirit.

Ah. Much more sophisticated.
But looking at your source code it looks as if you are pasting from pre-formatted text. There is a lot of junk code, including several conflicting codes for unnecessary tables of different widths.
It’s never a good idea to paste formatted text: it will eventually cause problems. In this case, the problem is evident immediately. This is causing your text to flow over behind your side bar.
Here it is cleaned up:
<h1>Buying a Home</h1> <h2>Are You Financially Ready?</h2> <p>If you’re like most Canadians, your home is probably the most important investment you will ever make. But how do you know if you are financially ready for all the responsibilities that come with homeownership?</p> <p>To help you avoid any unpleasant surprises, payheed to the following tips on how to assess your current financial situation, calculate your monthly expenses and determine how much home you can afford:</p> <ul> <li>First, calculate your net worth. Your net worth is the total of all of your assets (including any investments, savings, properties, vehicles and other assets you own) minus your liabilities (such as any mortgages, car loans, personal or student loans, credit cards or other debts). Your net worth will give you an accurate snapshot of your current financial situation, as well as an idea of how large a down payment you can afford.</li> <li>Next, calculate your current monthly expenses to determine what kind of mortgage payment could comfortably fit into your budget. Your monthly expenses include your current housing expenses (such as rent, utilities, parking and other fees) as well as all other regular, non-housing related costs (such as cable TV/Internet, debt payments, insurance, car fuel and repairs, clothing, medical and dental costs, child care expenses, groceries, entertainment and other expenses).</li> <li>Once you have a clear picture of your financial situation, figure out how much you can afford in monthly housing costs. As a general rule, your total monthly housing costs (including mortgage principal and interest, taxes and heating) shouldn’t exceed 32 per cent of your gross household monthly income. In addition, your entire monthly debt load (including mortgage payments, car or student loans, and credit cards) shouldn’t be more than 40 per cent of your gross household monthly income.</li> <li>If you have made all the necessary calculations and feel you are ready, it can be a good idea to select a lender and ask them to pre-approve you for a mortgage. Getting pre-approved lets you know in advance what price range you should have in mind when you are shopping for your new home.</li> </ul> -
Wow! Thanks a lot. Does that mean all material has to be written (as ooppposed to c & paste)? Could I learn this procedure from that HTML site or do you have some easier instructions?
-
It does not look like you have fixed your post, or perhaps it’s an issue on my computer and I should clear my cache!
You can copy text, but do it as plain text. On a mac, it would be text-edit. Not sure what on Windows? Also, there is a “paste as plain text” in the visual editor here as well. Then format the text and add images in the visual editor on WordPress.
Or use Windows Live Writer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/ where you can format your post including images as you like. No bad code introduced. (That’s not in my own experience, but lots of real experts here say it is so)
There are alternatives for Macs as well, but I just try to work with html. I’m getting better at it, but am no expert!
Learning about html is certainly do-able. And I’m sure you could do it. (if I can, then, you can…)

momojv – your blog is private, so no-one can look at it to get an idea of what’s going on.
-
@ momojv
Private blog or not, you must learn the difference between pages and posts:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/Your “home page” is unique. It is a dynamic page where all of the articles you publish to your blog are displayed. Only posts (no pages) will appear in your home page!!! Your home page is the only page where you can post articles.
Other pages are static. They are for information that does not change, like an “about” page, or a page of “books you must read,” or “what color is my hair,” or something that stays the same all the time ( ≥^.^≤ ) that your readers need to understand in order read your blog.
Putting a picture on your home page, you must put it into an article or post or “blog entry.” Pages will not appear on your home page. How readers connect or find the pages is theme dependent.
Images should appear on pages, but with a private blog, we would need more info about how you are adding them. A link that we can see, perhaps??? or a more complete description of what you are doing?
-
Pages will not appear on your home page. How readers connect or find the pages is theme dependent.
Some themes have navigation tabs at the top so readers can find your pages, others may have only a “home” tab, and some have not navigations tabs at all. If your theme doesn’t have nav tabs, then you must use a pages widget in your sidebar so readers can find your pages.

Well her blog is at http://airingabuse.wordpress.com/ . The domain http://airingabuse.com/ is still parked free and not yet redirected.
You can start by looking through the FAQ for some help. http://en.support.wordpress.com/

@pornstarbabylon
Apologies, but I think I had checked: http://airingabuse.wordpress.com/
the other day, because that is what I [almost always] do when someone does not provide a link to wp.com blog; that link did not, then, connect to an active wordpress.com blog. But, perhaps I am mistaken? very possible. At any rate, if that is so and you are asking about http://airingabuse.wordpress.com/, then, my apologies.
Right now, the “widget pasture” contains only an archives widget and a category widget . The blog has only one post which is categorized with everything listed in the category widget: 5 categories.
If you are trying to start a blog, then pornstarbabylon gave you a good place to start.
If you have (separately upgraded or) purchased a domain name, then you might look into this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
