Getting started

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay, so I’ve signed up. Now I can’t find one single word about how to create a blog. Where do I get started? Shouldn’t this be blindingly obvious? Or is it, and I’m an idiot. .

    Ah. Just received another email. Problem may be solved.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No. I give up. Even if the domain name is accepted the system just sticks. If I press ‘escape’ it just takes me to a blank page. Create a blog in minutes, ho ho. That’s an hour already and I don’t even have a domain name. I’ll wait for advice. Is the system having an off day?

    @Guy

    Hi there …looks like you’ve created the blog as I’ve just visited …looks like you just need to create some content via the dashboard …”new post” in the upper right side of the dashboard … Don’t give up so easily …. go to the wordpress.COM home page sign in with your username and password …look for the “my blogs” entry …just under where it says WordPress.COM … select my blogs …and you should see your blog listed there ..select your blog ….you’re taken to your blog ..in the upper left select dashboard …and you should be good to go ….no problems with the system as far as I can tell …did you receive a confirmation email with your username, and password? Was your domain available? Hope this helps …

    Best …

    Log in to your account at http://wordpress.com/

    Here is your site: http://guymax.wordpress.com/
    (you don’t need to be logged in to view it, but when you are logged in, there is a grey bar across the top of your screen with “My Account” “My Dashboards” “New Posts.”
    Click “New Posts” and begin writing.

    If you are logged in, you can just type this:
    Here is your dashboard: http://guymax.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
    to reach your dashboard.

    You can reach your dashboard by logging in, going to your site, then clicking on the Meta widget in your sidebar:
    Meta —> Site Admin

    Many thanks. Every name I tried was rejected, yet it seems to have created sites all the same. Weird. Anyway, got there in the end. Thanks again. All my fault as usual.

    Hang on. I haven’t published my site and do not want to until it’s in good shape. How come everyone can see it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just make it private:
    dashboard —> settings —> privacy —> “I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose “

    As a beginner, you should take a look at the support pages. They will help you learn a lot! For example, the info about privacy came from:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

    Of course if you can’t find the information you need, you are always welcome to ask questions here in the forums.

    So on the privacy issue, if you set it to private, can you only allow wordpress users to read it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    If you set your blog to private, no one will be able to visit it except WP users you specify (and except WP staff, of course).

    I want to make my blog private — visible only to about 100 people. Two questions: 1. I see I’m limited to 35 people unless I want to pay for more. How much more? 2. How do I find out my audience’s WordPress usernames? Obviously, I can ask. But is there a user lookup?

    @jrobinson

    How much does it cost?
    For the most recent prices for the Space Upgrade and other upgrades, please check out the list under the Upgrades tab in your dashboard. http://support.wordpress.com/upgrades
    Space upgrades reference link > http://en.support.wordpress.com/space-upgrade/

  • Unknown's avatar

    There isn’t a lookup, but if you have their emails you can just use the email to invite them. It does, however, have to be the same email as their WordPress.com ID.

    As for pricing, the latest pricing is always on the Upgrades page of your Dashboard. At this point it says $29.97 US per year.

    But is there a user lookup?

    No I’m sorry there isn’t. The unique identifier for our username accounts is our email address and wordpress.com Staff will not release that “private” information.
