getting started basics
-
Hi, new to wordpress (was on blogger). Some very basic questions to start.
1) Is this the actual support forum for wordpress.com? It took me a while to find this. I was running around and around in wordpress.org and not getting anywhere. There is a help window on the main page that appears when you click on the “?” Is this an alternate means for getting help?
2) In account settings, under primary site, the address shown above is listed as “coming soon.” I’m unable to access this address. I want to begin here. Web address in dialogue box remains “http://milwaukeegunviolence2015.wordpress.com”
3) I want to edit the “lifeofashutinmke” domain name. I believe it’s pretty straight forward, however, since I’m unable to access it I’ve yet to try.
4) I want to then import a blogger blog into wordpress.com. I’m assuming this is also pretty straight forward, but any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Is this the actual support forum for wordpress.com? It took me a while to find this. There is a help window on the main page that appears when you click on the “?” Is this an alternate means for getting help?
Yes, you are at the right place and you can also click on “?” to get help for your issues.
You can read more about getting WordPress.com support here: https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options
I was running around and around in wordpress.org and not getting anywhere.
WordPress.org forums are best for websites using the self-hosted WordPress software from WordPress.org.
Self-hosting is when you pay a web host company to host your website on the internet.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. You can learn more here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org
In account settings, under primary site, the address shown above is listed as “coming soon.” I’m unable to access this address.
New sites are “Coming Soon” by default.
You can change it by going to My Site → Manage → Settings and on the Settings → General page, you’ll see a Privacy section. Here you can change “Coming Soon” to “Public”.
It allows everyone to see your site and enables your site to be included in search engine results.
Learn more about privacy settings here: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings
I want to edit the “lifeofashutinmke” domain name.

I want to then import a blogger blog into wordpress.com

bizanimesh, thanks for all the useful info.
So before transferring blog over from blogger and making public I need to choose a theme. Unfortunately this is confusing and frustrating. Why doesn’t WordPress have a link from the “themes” tab to videos (say on youtube) that compare and contrast different themes?
I’ve looked at several videos on youtube laying out themes. I’m confused though cause when I went to look at a theme in more detail on my home page the theme wasn’t there. Adler was the theme in question. This was the first one I searched for, and it was missing, so I stopped, unsure of the info I’m getting.
I did investigate one theme from my homepage–Textbook. Not sure if you can help me with this, but for that theme is there a mechanism to scroll between blog posts WITHOUT having to mouse-click? It would be great if you could be able to use the left and right arrows to move between “previous” and “next” blog posts once one post has been opened.
On a separate note, while looking for info on “themes”, I went on to the wordpress.com site without signing in. I searched to no avail, but I did find myself on what appeared to be a news and info page of current events and the like. I didn’t like what I saw there. This got me thinking–once my page is set up and public, will I be getting ANY unsolicited ads popping up on my page?

Additionally, the Colinear theme is setup by months. Posts within each month are layed out latest to oldest, yet the calendar (obviously) appears as oldest to newest. Is there a way to reverse the order of the posts for each month so that the oldest appear first. That way you could scroll down through time. If later posts incorporate earlier material you would then not have to be constantly scrolling down to read a post, and then have to scroll back up to read the next one. This seems backwards to me.

Hi there,
So before transferring blog over from blogger and making public I need to choose a theme. Unfortunately this is confusing and frustrating.
You can use the “Live demo” option. You can use this option to look through the style of different pages before selecting a theme for your site.
Learn more here how to use “Live demo” option: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#preview-themes

I’m sorry for the trouble you are having with this. Could you please share the link of the video?

This is something that might require editing in the theme.
Since direct editing of a theme is a bad practice and also not allowed in WordPress.com because you can lose your changes every time it updates. But you can edit a theme after creating a child theme of the parent or main theme.
Please note that, this feature is only available in Business and eCommerce plans.
You can read more about WordPress.com plan features here.
will I be getting ANY unsolicited ads popping up on my page?
In WordPress.com, you may see display advertisements on your free site. This keeps free features free! To eliminate ads on your blog entirely, you can purchase one of the paid plans.
You can read more about removing advertising on WordPress.com here: https://wordpress.com/support/no-ads
Is there a way to reverse the order of the posts for each month so that the oldest appear first.
By default, posts are designed to display in reverse chronological order (from newest to oldest) in WordPress.
If want to reverse that and display your posts in chronological order (from oldest to newest), you can go with this tutorial: https://wordpress.com/support/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order
Please let me know if you have further questions. 🙂
