Getting started with custom CSS

  I have read through the pages indicated regarding customization of the current CSS.
  I am currently using Academica and really would love to know where to start.

  What I am trying to do is fix the home page with pictures as well as fix the layout of the text etc. Please help me learn how to customize (and find) the CSS codes that I will need.
