Getting the Domain Mapping to Work
-
This is what i want.
I own a domain name. Pretend it’s domainname.com
I have a wordpress blog. Let’s say it’s blog.wordpress.com
I have long had a forwarding thing on my domain name so if you type in domainname.com it pulls up blog.wordpress.com
I bought domain mapping from wordpress in hopes of making it so if you type domainname.com it will bring up contents of blog.wordpress.com but it will actually say domainname.com on the pages instead of blog.wordpress.com. Am I explaining myself well enough? Here’s a site where it appears that what i want is going on. She seems to be using wordpress but her domain name is all that sows up as the address. http://inexplicableways.com/
So how do I accomplish this? Following the instructions here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ just cause me to get a “not found” error in a browser.
Help please…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you have followed ALL the instructions, set the name servers, paid for domain-mapping, and changed the primary domain in your dashboard, things should work. Hvae you done that?
Unless you tell us the URL of your domain it is impossible to tell you what might be wrong.

Thanks for replying.
I have a domain neilshurley.com
I’ve followed the instrux to map it to thatneilguy.blogspot.com
But when I type neilshurley.com into my browser I get this:
Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://thatneilguy.wordpress.com/” This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.

http://neilshurley.com/ works fine from my end of the Internet. The name servers may not have updated in your neighborhood yet.
-
Whew. Maybe I’m just too impatient. I dure appreciate your assistance. I’ll try it again in a few minutes…
-
I’m getting this on Firefox:
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

It works just fine for me.
It’s natural for it to take different lengths of time to be reachable from different places on the internet. How long ago did you make this change? It can take up to a couple of days to settle down.
-
I guess patience is my issue. So when you see it, does it actually continue to read neilshurley.com in the address abr or does it come up as thatneilguy.wordpress.com?
-
It continues to read http://neilshurley.com/ which it should do, if you’ve set it as the primary domain.
-
Well that’s definitely what I want. I still don’t understand why I can’t see it but I’m pleased that it’s working somewhere. I’ll sit on my hands for awhile and try later. Then I can start updating the site.
Anyway I really appreciate everyone’s patience with me and your assistance.

This issue appears to be resolved. It takes between 48 – 72 hours for these domain changes to populate throughout the internet.

Oy. Everyone I ask to look at the site sees it with no problem. But not me. I still can’t view it. Grrrr. It’s just not fair. It’s not fair, I tells ya!

I still can’t view my own site. I still get error messages in both firefox and safari. In safari, i both cleared the cache and deleted all cookies, but it didn’t change anything and this morning I still can’t view my won site. *sigh*
