Getting the portfolio on the front page (sketch theme)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi All,

I was hoping someone could help me. I have tried using Illustratr theme and now switched to sketch and for both I haven’t been able to get my portfolio project to show on the front page. I followed the instructions and trouble shooting and trying to use the shortcode…and I know that must have done something wrong…but can’t figure out quite what that is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Ange

    Hi Ange,

The Sketch theme relies on the WordPress.com Portfolio feature. I see you’ve enabled portfolio projects on your site, so that first step is done. :)

The next thing to do is set up a page with the Sketch theme’s Portfolio Page template. Here are the instructions for that, from the Sketch theme page:

When you first activate Sketch, you’ll see your posts in a traditional blog format. If you’d like to use the portfolio page template as the front page of your site, as the demo site does, it’s simple to configure:

    1. Create or edit a page, and assign it to the Portfolio Page Template from the Page Attributes module.
    2. Go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page”.
    3. Select the page you just assigned the Portfolio Page Template to as “Front page” and set another page as the “Posts page” to display your blog posts.

Please give that a try, and let me know if you have questions about it!

Thanks for that rachel…I’ll have a go at that now…

But how do you get the slide at the top?!! I get the pictures in square, but not the slide! So frustrating!!

  • Unknown's avatar

@playitasgolfdecember2014 – I just checked your site at http://playitasgolfdecember2014.wordpress.com/ and I see the slider at the top there. Are you still having trouble with that?

Thanks for your interest in helping me. I am on my way to solve this, but I am still confused. Annoying!! ;)

In two of the portfolio pages I have included a 1272 px pic. Does not look good in the slide.
In the page Playitas I have included a 1272 px pic. Looks good.
In the only post I have on the blog I have included a 1272 px pic. Looks good.

I have choosen landscape as featured image 800 x 600 pixels. Looks good.

It says that it is important to include a 1272 px pic – 1272 is for including pics in the portofolio, page or post and feature image is how it is shown under the slide? And only there?!

A last: I do not get why the Playitas page does not open – on click nothing happens (or I get to the front page once again).

The featured image options (landscape, portrait, or square) only apply to the thumbnail images for portfolio projects, which appear below the slider. The slider itself has larger images — so it’s best to use a large image for that. Specifically, the images for featured content (what appears in the slider) are 1092 pixels wide.

You can check those image specs in the “Quick Specs” section at the bottom of the Sketch theme page:

Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):

    1. The main column width is 764.
    2. The sidebar width is 273.
    3. Featured Images for portfolio projects are 800 wide by 600 (landscape), 1067 (portrait), and 800 (square) height
    4. Featured Images for single posts are 764 by 300
    5. Images for Featured Content should be at least 1092 in width.
    6. Custom header image should be at least 1092 in width.

It looks like some of the featured images for pages in your slider are only 800 pixels wide, which may explain why they don’t appear as sharp as the other images. Please try uploading images that are at least 1092 pixels wide as featured images there and see if that helps. :)

I do not get why the Playitas page does not open – on click nothing happens (or I get to the front page once again).

Right now, the Playitas Resort page is set as your site’s front page. You can view and change that setting under Settings > Reading in your site’s dashboard.

If you’d like that Playitas page to be its own page, separate from the front page, you’ll need to create new, different page and set that one to be the front page instead. Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Now I have put the 1272 px pics as feature – and then it shows correct in the slider. But it is not big enough for tumbnails.

    This post
    http://playitasgolfdecember2014.wordpress.com/portfolio/i-vantan-pa-playitas-golfbanan-pa-valle-del-este/

has a 800×600 as feature and in the post – does look ok when clicking on it and as a tumbnail, but not in the slide.
You cannot have a project in the slide then? As they need different sizes of the pictures?

The Playitas page is set as front page yes. If I disable front page turns to posts (blogg).

I must have a page as front page – otherwise the slider does not appear. Playitas is just created for that matter.

It gets confusing with all the different sized in the pics.

When is 1272 important if 1092 is enough?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

If you’re ever unsure of what size image to upload, I’d recommend uploading the largest image your theme uses. (For Sketch, 1272 pixels is the widest image it uses — that’s used when displaying full-sized images on large screens.) If you upload smaller images, like a 800×600 pixel image, it will look blurry or pixelated when it’s used in the slider. But if you uploader a larger image to that project, instead, it will look good in the slider and will just be automatically resized smaller to fit in other places where it’s used.

The Playitas page is set as front page yes. If I disable front page turns to posts (blogg).

If you don’t need the Playitas page to be displayed anywhere, and only used as the front page of your site, you can remove the “featured” tag from that page. Then it won’t appear in the slider.

Alternately, you can create a new page and use that as your site’s front page. Then, you can have the Playitas page as a separate page on your site and in the slider.

Ahh! it worked to deleted “featured” in Playitas!
I will work with this tonight. Problem is that I did not save the original pictures from Valle del Este last new years week – really stupid. So the only I have left are those which were published on my daily blog http://blogg.visit-stina.com/?cat=20 which means 600 x 400 or so. That is why I but six pics in one in 1272, but one image at a time is a lot better.
    Thanks for you help!

You’re welcome! If you have any other questions about this theme, I’d recommend starting a new forum thread so we can keep track of them separate from the original question in this thread. :) Thanks!
