Getting the Right News Paper Theme
-
I am newbie and want to create a site that could become quite complex in small steps….
At the simplest level, I would like a NewsPaper Style theme for blogging. What theme is a good choice for me if…..
In the shorter term:
I would like some potentially complex pages which probably quite standard for fund raising, Star Rated Reviewing with three linked choice lists for filtering, Patient Story telling with facilities to open and close complaints filtered by three linked choice lists. In the longer term:
I would like to regionalise the pages (e.g. North , South, East & West). Some content common to all pages, other content specific to a region. Is it even possible? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
At the simplest level, I would like a NewsPaper Style theme for blogging. What theme is a good choice for me if…..
You may wish to consider our Magazine (Newspaper) style themes here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/magazine
I would like some potentially complex pages which probably quite standard for fund raising, Star Rated Reviewing with three linked choice lists for filtering, Patient Story telling with facilities to open and close complaints filtered by three linked choice lists.
On free sites, it is possible to add a PayPal donation button, but the other functionality that you mention (star reviews, review filtering) is not built in to WordPress.com. For that you typically need to add a “plugin” which is only possibly if you first upgrade to our WordPress.com Business Plan or higher.
That would allow you to install any of the following: https://wordpress.com/plugins/metpoliceharassment.wordpress.com?s=star+review
I’m not sure what you meant by “Patient Story telling” exactly, so I am not able to recommend any plugins that are suitable for that feature.
I would like to regionalise the pages (e.g. North , South, East & West). Some content common to all pages, other content specific to a region. Is it even possible?
You mean to offer separate sites for each region? Or do you just need to be abe to filter content on the main site by region. For example, you can add “categories” to your blog posts, so that posts that relate only to the North can be filtered if you have added that category to posts that are about things that happen in the North.
If you are referring to the creation of separate sites, that would be more expensive as each site would require it’s own upgrade (a single upgrade cannot be shared with multiple sites)
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi many thanks for your reply. I will start with a standard WP Magazine Theme. Are the purchased magazine type themes likely to be much better and in what way?
If I change a theme, say from a Standard WP magaizin theme to a more advanced one, what implications would that have for any pages created while using the old theme? are they easily interchangeable.
I guess I need to do more learning on plugins. A good starting point would be the the Paypal Donation option. I can then move onto Reviews which involve:
>>> Selecting a region
>>> On the basis of the region, selecting a hospital
>>> The select a service for the hospital and rating it with a comment ….
>>> Then displaying the same data depending on choice of region / hospitalThen a similar facility to record a complaint (aka Patient Story) that can be closed when the issue is resolved.
In terms of Regionalisation – I envisage the User records their Region as part of the Account Set Up which could form the basis of personalisation based on region. Suppose the site has some pages which are of National Interest and others which are of Regional Interest, like about hospitals in your region, how would you implement that? Different Sites for each region? Different Pages for each Region?
I can see the WP Pages and content are held in SQL database which raises some interesting possibilities.

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching back out.

Paid for themes, generally speaking, do come with a few more features and are generally supported by their theme developers.
When it comes to theme selection, it’s best to not look at which theme is better, but instead which theme best serves your needs.
So it’s probably in your interest to nail down the must-haves and compare themes based on those requirements.
If I change a theme, say from a Standard WP magaizin theme to a more advanced one, what implications would that have for any pages created while using the old theme? are they easily interchangeable.
Content isn’t lost when changing themes.
When changing themes, you would need to configure the new theme options and check that the pages are looking as you require.

I hope this helps.
