Getting TwentyFourteen Theme tags on featured items to show up

  I can not figure out how to gets the tags to show on my “featured” posts. I have searched through settings and tested things out, but have not found the way to do it.
  In the theme example, it shows in each box (in the grid format) picture, tags, and title. So I want the tags on my featured posts to show up above the titles.

  I see that you have assigned Tags to the posts prior to publishing them.
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/
  Have you gone to Appearance – Customize and set up there.

  Use a tag to feature your posts. If no posts match the tag, sticky posts will be displayed instead.
  Layout
  Tag name
  Hide tag from displaying in post meta and tag clouds.

  I did assign the tags prior to publishing them. So I tried assigning a tag afterward and it still did not show. How can you tell that I tagged it prior to publish?

  I have gone to appearance and none of it makes the tags show.
