ghost categories

  I was having problems with the categories, so I thought it’d be best to delete them all and then re-create the ones I wanted. Bad idea…
  Some categories remained and they seemed to have posts attached to them. I manually removed these posts, hoping that this would remove the empty ghost categories. It didn’t.
  What can I do? I can’t delete them and I can’t ignore them and create new ones because I’d have duplicate categories. Any ideas?
