Girly Themes?

    @kam
    I noticed the same thing and felt the same way. Also the mauve-ness made me think “old lady”.

    @rain
    Neon Scribbles is you, for sure. ;)
    But eye rippy green in Frozen Garden – no flipping way!
    {wash your mouth girlfiend}

    I’m going to sob into my pillow now … :(

    @dirkgently: In view of the importance of the subject – and one which is currently the subjet du jour in WP I would strongly counsel against any one holding forth on what licences do / do not permit unless they are either an attorney or at least absolutely clear what they are talking about. The very last thing this subject needs right now is any degree of imprecision. And certainly not in the basic stuff – like whether links can be removed and whether people can earn money.

    atthe404 ……sorry for trying to help.

    I’m sure the people at wordpress rely on others (read “qualified offline lawyers, not wordpress.com bloggers contributing to the forums”) for legal advice before they do anything. They have put themes created by third parties on the MU system before…which means THEY know what the rules are, what can and can’t be done. Are they not the deal makers?

    Whether ANY of us understand the licensing or not is of no consequence. If users were allowed to add themes then the issue would be relevant.

    I gave my opinions in response to a question about the GPL….I also explained that I didn’t really understand it myself, and that anyone wishing to investigate further should see the detail themselves from the source……..the result of this was for background (for those who never heard of “GPL” but realize it has some bearing on the possibility of a theme they’ve seen appearing in their dashboard for them to select for their blog), the point above still stands.

    The peanut gallery is great, it’s stocked with food…..ideal for a siege. lolololol

    Another vote for “kitty themes” … my wife will be all over those.

    @dirkgently: Well for several of *us* understanding licensing is of very great consequence indeed. It is really sloppy to think that this does not effect you. Every one who uses / misuses software licenses has an effect – maybe a small one- but an effect. The myth that Open Source Software can not be used for commercial purposes (ie be sold) for example is very damaging. I did not mean to sound harsh, but well intentioned people can still inadvertently propogate persistent misconceptions. If they do so they might well get corrected.

    I’d REALLY like that pink-kapy to become available.

    @Matt
    I thought this was a thread for girls to suggest girly themes in. Apparently I was wrong. I’m out of here.

    @dirkgently and drmike
    Thanks you for sharing your opinion(s) on GPL, etc. I did appreciate the exchange. My remark about the peanut gallery had nothing whatsoever to do with what dirkgently said. Based on the erroneous assumption that this was a girl thread, I issued dirk an invitation to return to the peanut gallery to be the correct place for the guys to be.

    @Matt
    From where I sit this thread has been hijacked so I will be corresponding by email.

    @chicablog
    On the top right hand corner of any blog page you will find a light blue feedback button. When you click it a pane opens where you can type in a message to staff. This is the place where you can write down your request for the Pink-Kupy theme and send it directly to Matt. When it comes to deciding which new themes will be added Matt is the only decision maker.

    In the context of third party themes appearing on the MU wordpress hosting, the people who need to know the licensing conditions do. The members who have blogs hosted with wordpress.com have no control over the legalities of the third party software…..we are not responsible for making sure it complies……the wordpress administrators are.

    Those who host their own need to know for themselves, as they are legally responsible for it. As such, my comments still stand.

    timethief

    I took the “peanut gallery” remark in the good humor it was intended lol

  • Unknown's avatar

    @dirkgently. Now you are just trolling. Your so called comments are statements of fact which are plain wrong, and they are there to be read by everybody. And I would never rely on WP com in any matter of theme licensing at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You don’t have to rely on the administrators at wordpress.com for licensing. But as far as our wordpress.com hosted bogs, THEY are responsible for the legalities, not us. They are the owners and operators of their own servers. This means that ALL themes available to us members here, have already been through the legal filter to make sure they comply with the licenses. It also applies to ALL new themes added in the future.

    If you do not trust the wordpress administrators that the themes they use fully comply….do you use any of the themes? They may (if that assumption is true) be breaking the license conditions…..and if we (the members) need to be responsible, then it’s up to US to check out the legalities on the theme we want to use. Those who use them anyway may be subject to some legal action for breaking conditions……….after all, we can only alter them so much, most is locked for security.

    I get where your high horse is tethered, but do you think through your issues before you saddle up? Yes WordPress is available as a separate download for hosting on a third party server…in which case the use of it is no longer wordpress’s legal responsibility…….which means that any licensing conditions must be taken care of by the owner / administrator of the server / website……in which case they’d go to the source…..ie the site I gave the link for….to explain what was and was not allowed, and study it from a practical application viewpoint.

    The crux of this, the way I see it…..is that whoever is legally responsible for hosting it, should know the legal conditions for doing so…..and in the case of wordpress.com, they do.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No they don’t. And nor do you. I am out.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I thought this was a thread for girls to suggest girly themes in

    *chuckle* Nope, it’s actually for the guys to post their requests for girly themes. Or that’s how I reread the first post.

    I know it’s really not but still….

    Oh, and just ignore atthe404. He or she is just a trouble making. Take a look at their previous posts.

    Below is a copy of my submission.

    @Matt
    In response to your ideas forum post regarding suggestions for “girly” themes I would like to officially request Frozen Garden

    My reasons for requesting this specific theme are:
    (1) it’s one of the very few full screen themes;
    (2) the artistic detailing is subtle and unique, setting it apart from full screen themes that are corporate/commercial/business-like in appearance;
    (3) it’s feminine in an understated way that pink hearts and flowers themes are not;
    (4) it will suit my new blog at {edit} for which I intend to purchase a domain as within that blog I intend to cover topics from that range from personal posts to vegetarian cooking and organic gardening.

    It seems to me that the forum thread you posted to communicate with us female bloggers has been hijacked. I do not wish to enter a forum battle over corporate policy. Also I do not believe talk about democracy/mob rule is applicable and, worse still, I believe it will lead to heated exchanges that I do not want to be part of.

    Thanks, in advance for accepting this request via feedback.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I will bow out and allow the ladies to continue this thread, after one response……

    OMG!!!! You cook vegetarians???? Someone needs to lock this woman up…..preferably without her cooking utensils. lolololol

  • Unknown's avatar

    I don’t see it as requesting only females give feedback on girly themes; surely males are capable of expressing their opinion on whether or not a theme appears girly. Feminity is inherent, but what constitutes a girly blog template is not written in our genes.

    I want Neon Scribble!!!! And Sakura! But in blue!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I can’t seem to find a link for Neon scribble? Someone link me, please?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @carocat
    Here’s the link. It’s under under Scribbles http://chasethestars.com/themes/

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you, Timethief.

    That theme is definitely something different. I’d love it in red.
