  On wordpress.com, this doc suggests that github gist’s are supported, just add a gist url on it’s own line, the contents of the gist will actually be expanded in your post.

  This does not seem to work with the new ‘block’ editor however, true? Is there any way to get an expanded/embedded gist with the new block editor?

  For that, use a Classic Block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
