Ads are not available at the moment on WordPress.com blogs. If you need the few cents you get by putting ugly advertisements on your blog, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
However, rumor has it that Automattic will make Google AdSense available on WordPress.com soon. No official word on that AFAIK though, so don’t hold your breath.

Matt’s talked about it to the mainstream media, just not the community. I don’t know whether that counts as ‘official’.

There’s a very recent news story about American Airlines suing Google over the paid sponsor ads that show up when you search on AAdvantage ™. Those paid ads, meaning they paid Google to place them in the search return, were frequently ads for AAdvantage’s competitors. (Although it doesn’t seem to be working like that at present.)
If you read closely in some of the accounts of the lawsuit, it is acknowledged that those paid-for ads are the bulk of Google’s profit with Adsense. I’d always wondered why they went to so much trouble to run all those other ads, which I’ve -never- clicked-through on. They’re cover for the paid ads.

next time you post a thread, could you search to see if it has already been asked. on the main forum page, you can search. typing in “google adsense” will get you a couple 100 threads that have the same question.

Yesterday I discovered at work that Google ads showed up under and above one of my pictures. At home I do not have this problem.I have never asked nor approved of it and it makes my photo look afwul. How is this possible?

Didn’t you know? WordPress.com inserts its own adsense blocks into our blogs, which is why we’re not allowed to add our own ads. They like to keep it quiet but it’s documented in a year-old blog post.

@wank, the ads you refer to are mentioned in the faq. Searching the faq for adsense yields a page that includes:
>You may see some advertising on the domain.
>1. VIP blogs are able to run ads.
>2. We also run some ads sometimes…
and then there’s a link to the blog post you mention.Don’t get me wrong. I dislike the ads. I wish that ad-freeness was included in the CSS upgrade. I would like to see the ads mentioned more prominently than they currently are. But if Automattic really intended to “keep it quiet,” it wouldn’t be so easy to find the reference to them in the faq.

Thanks! Aborted…sorry to hear it…but no worries, I did rather think it was Too Good To Be True, that I could Push-Button the dot org WP lump into life. Oh well, guess I’ll just Have to open up a Bunch of tech dictionaries and creaky brain and work it out, some day. (WHY is that stuff written so it’s So hard to understand….
