Giving non-WP members access to a private site
-
I’ve created a WP website/blog to use for communication with a particular company. I want to give only the members of that company access to the site.
I’ve marked the site “private.” Thus, when someone tries to access the home page, they must log in with user name and password – which I take to mean a WP user name and password.
Is there a way that I can allow the company’s members to view my site without making them create a WP account? For instance, by making the site only accessible to people who sign in with email addresses that I would list in my settings?
Or should I just do a “workaround” – create a dummy WP account for the company and give them the username and password? (The downside being that if they leave comments, I won’t know who exactly is speaking.)
Alternatives? Thoughts? Advice?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no way to make a “private” blog where people need to sign-in both private and public. You can have two different blogs under the same account if you want ie. one with the visibility set to private and one with the visibility set to public.

Is there a way to make it private, but have the “key to the door” be an email address the reader has, rather than making them go through the process of creating an account and user ID?
Metaphorically speaking, I’m trying to give them a key, rather than force them to manufacture their own key.

I have the same question. In my case I want elderly relatives to see my private blog without requiring them to create an account. They do not like giving any details to a website and I suspect would not be able to set up the account however easy it is.

Access to a private WordPress.COM blog does require a username and a password. There’s no way around it, however you can create one for them if you wish. They will have to enter the username and password at least once, and check the box “Remember me”.
Other than the e-mail address, the account creation form does not ask for much personal information. And you do not need to create a blog. There is a “Just a username please” option.

Good. The same Terms of Service apply to all wordpress.con blogs whether or not they are set to public or private visibility and charging people to read the blog is a no go. I’m afraid e-commerce isn’t possible here at WordPress.com, and there are no plans to develop anything for that at this time. If you require e-commerce/shopping cart functionality, there are no restrictions on e-commerce if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
See here to learn the differences:

Thanks.
1/ I already have my own semi-commercial wordpress.org website, but I wanted to help a non-technical friend to set up an easy to use, easy to maintain small ecommerce website (video on a subscription basis).
I guess I will have to set up a .org website.
2/ I know this is not the right place (.com), but what would you recommand to manage a subscription fee with user’s access?
So far, the most interesting (not tested yet) is :

There is no FTP access to wordpress.com free hosted blogs on this multiuser blogging platform for security reasons and that means we cannot upload individual plugins into our blogs.
We do not provide support for wordpress.org software at wordpress.com. We direct all with wordpress.org questions and support issues to post to this forum. > http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as wordpress.org are the keepers of that software for self-hosting.
