Glitch with link emailed to followers
-
re: theimmigrationpages.com
one of my followers emailed me today to notify me that when she clicked on the link (to a new post) in the email, the page was unavailable / not found. everything on my site seems to be loading and working properly, so I was concerned that there was a problem with the link emailed to all my followers. does something need to be fixed? I would like to avoid this from happening again. thank you.my only thought why this may have happened is that I changed the publication date after I initially published the link. could that have rendered the link unusable? not sure.
thank you for your quick response.

Yes that will do it – the date is part of the URL / address – and you just changed the address – I also verified this on my test blog – the original address now fails

thank you! good to know for the future.
a quick follow up: is there an easy way to send a blast email/notice to followers about the glitch/another issue in the future?

You can make a short Post – with the new address and a sentence that explains the old link is broken but here is the new link – when that is published it will go out to all the subscribers that got the original link that is now wrong – also if someone reaches your site with the wrong URL (maybe someone forwarded the link) – there will be the correction at the top of the page –

Origin has an active custom excerpt function. You could use that without making a separate short post explaining the technical difficulty.
Just use the custom excerpt box to make a summary of your next usual post, and on the bottom add the notice about the problem with the previous post.
Once that post is published and the email / feed goes out, you can remove the line from the custom excerpt and update the post.

Oh, but my mistake, while the email notification will work with Origin, the RSS feed changes when the excerpt changes. But I’d guess that the feed would have updated when you changed the date (link) of the original post so it wouldn’t really be of concern to them.

I should thank you: somehow I’ve overlooked that theme and it’s really nice! I’ve been thinking about changing my theme and that one has great possibilities!
