[GlotPress] Leading and trailing space
-
I’m not sure if this problem has been adressed in the past or if this is the right place to do it, but we’re constantly running into translation problems because of GlotPress not showing any leading or trailing spaces on the english strings. Take the following string:
Location: %s
Five leading spaces but a translating volunteer opening GlotPress doesn’t recognize them, translates just “Location: %s” and when the string gets deployed we run into a problem.
How about using a middot (·) as an indicator for leading and trailing spaces?
·····Location: %s

Hi Martin,
Thanks for pointing that out. I am checking with our developer if those spaces are necessary. I’ll get back to you as soon as I find out. -
Hi Naoko,
thanks for answering. Unfortunately this is only one of many strings with leading or trailing spaces. In some cases the strings look like this:
·on·
Here we have a leading and trailing space and a case of translating words instead of sentences. The string is later combined with other ones to something like:

Volunteers translate the “on” without noticing the spaces and after deployment we end up with something like:

This has happend so often over the years, that I thought it’s time to mention it. So while it’s very kind of you to check for the necessity of the leading spaces in the earlier mentioned string, it won’t save the bigger problem of GlotPress not indicating leading and trailing spaces.

I’ve put some more thoughts in it. In case it’s not feasible to display the spaces, how about GlotPress issue a warning if a translation is missing the leading and/or trailing spaces of the original string?
GlotPress already shows different warnings like “Too many tags in translation” or “Lenghts of source and translation differ too much.”. I thought it might be possible to use the already existing warning system to solve the problem.

The issue has been fixed by our developer. Please give it another try and let me know how it goes.

@kardotim: Only the first issue is fixed. Not the second one and not the general problem of leading and trailing spaces.
Here is a screenshot of how the plugin codestyling localization handles this (emphasize the spaces):

@Martin: Ping Marko Heijnen and/or Yoav Farhi and make a GlotPress bugticket with these suggestions!
