Hi mpl1000
If I transfer the domain to wordpress, do I lose the .com ending? In other words if my domain is http://www.playsoccer.com will it change to http://www.playsoccer wordpress.com if I transfer?
No, If you transfer your existing domain to WordPress.com it will not change to yourdomain.wordpress.com. This .wordpress.com is the free domain WordPress provides when you create your site on WordPress.com.
Users with the free plan, access their site using this WordPress.com subdomain.
But, if you will transfer your custom domain to your WordPress.com and use that on your WordPress.com site then you will be able to access your site with your custom domain i.e http://www.playsoccer.com/
Also, keep in mind to use a custom domain to your WordPress.com site you must be under any of the paid plans of WordPress.com. To know more about the plans please refer to the link below:

Thank you shubhamgmath! Yes, I will use a paid plan. So, the benefit in transferring the domain name is convenience to manage everything in one place. If it’s not transferred, there is a $13.00 wordpress fee (in addition to hosting site’s annual fees), is that correct?

Hi @mpl1000
It is better to keep everything in one place to make it easy at the time of renewal. But, it is totally dependent on you. If you don’t wish to transfer your domain, You can map that domain. It is like once you upgrade to the paid plan either you can add a new domain or map an existing domain under the free domain credit which comes with every plan.
So, there are no such fees as of now to map to your, just you need to be on paid plans of WordPress.com
To know more about the domain mapping thing, please refer to the link below:

Hi @mpl1000, just confirming you wouldn’t have to pay an extra mapping fee. It’s covered in your plan price. :)
And yes, the main benefit to transferring is being able to manage everything in one place. Transferring does also add an extra year to your domain, which we pay for as part of the plan package. After that you’d renew the domain here:
Or, just keep it where it is and you can map it with your plan.
Let us know if you have more questions!
