Goal: files.customdomain.com

I plan to purchase a premium subscription to wp.com this weekend, but want to ensure certain things are possible first. I am a freelance writer, with a custom domain, and need to make samples of my work easily accessible. I envision a related subdomain in my email signature, which the prospective client could click to access a descriptive listing of those sample files.

My domain name was secured through Google. I have bookmarked the relevant pages, both here and at Google, regarding setting domain pointers. But the page(s) re the subdomain aspect remain elusive. I’d deeply appreciate assistance, as I prefer not to resort to outsourcing what I suspect is a fairly simple setup … once you know what to do where. Many thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @writesquire, each subdomain would be a separate site, requiring a separate plan. Do you need that, or would it be just as well to include a link to a subdirectory containing the samples , such as customdomain.com/files or customdomain.com/portfolio ?

The latter would be fine. I didn’t realize that was possible, as my (dashboard) peek at URLs thus far indicate a pattern of: customdomain.com/type/links. I’m simply trying to avoid that trail, “type/links” in favor of your suggestion, /files.

Thank you for your prompt and on-point assistance. Much appreciated. I’ve been through your support area and assorted WP books, which provided answers to all else. This one however remained stubbornly elusive.

  • No problem. Those URLs all depend on the type of content you’re adding. Since you’re aiming for simpler URLs, you’ll want to use a Page instead of a post or article or other project type, if that makes sense. So you could have something like this:

    customdomain.com/files

You could make child pages like this:

customdomain.com/files/project_name and then add items to that, too. Some themes will even let you give the parent page a special layout that showcases the child pages.

Anyway, I hope that helps. Let us know if you have more questions! And by the way, since you have Premium, you should be able to reach support directly here: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

    Cheers!
