GoDaddy Domain Forwarding Security Error

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I have a website with WordPress and my domains are with GoDaddy. I currently have my domains set up with GoDaddy to FORWARD with MASKING to my WordPress website. However, I receive a ‘Website Unsafe’ security error when using the GoDaddy domains. I do NOT receive this error when visiting the WordPress URL directly. I spoke with GoDaddy and they stated that I needed to contact WordPress to find out if forwarding with masking can be enabled with WordPress.

However I also spoke with another associate at GoDaddy and was given an entirely different answer, so I am a bit confused. Perhaps you would be able to help me?

    Thank you.

The site I need help with is blainebugaski.wordpress.com.

  • We cannot fully support forwarding or masking here at WordPress.com.

To use a domain you own elsewhere with a site on WordPress.com, we have two options:

Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Has something changed recently? I’ve tried to forward to WordPress both WITH and WITHOUT “MASKING” and I still receive the same “Your connection is not private” warning message.

Just a few days ago it wasn’t doing this and up until then I had not had any problems since I started my WordPress website back in February.

  • We haven’t changed anything with regards to this recently, but we’ve never officially supported domain forwarding or masking either.

Question, for what reason does WordPress not support forwarding? Are you saying that forwarding to WordPress from another domain is NOT supported, or just that WordPress doesn’t support it in regards to customer support since it is a third party provider?

  • Hi there,

We’re not saying that this is not supported. It’s not recommended as this method can cause several problems with your site, including breaking mobile responsiveness, preventing stats and certain widgets from working, preventing us from serving your site over a secure HTTPS connection, and negatively affecting your site’s SEO.

The official and proper way for a domain to be connected to a site hosted in our platform is by mapping it.

I understand. I removed “masking” and that seems to have cured the security error.

The first tech I spoke with at GoDaddy didn’t seem to think that there should be any problem and they claimed that they were going to “reset” something that would take about 90 minutes. Hours later nothing changed so I contacted them again and the second individual told me what I mentioned about making sure “forwarding” and “masking” was “enabled” at WordPress.

Likely the GoDaddy tech assumed you were using WordPress at another hosting provider and not WordPress.com – we have more restrictions into what you can and cannot do with our managed WordPress hosted product. It happens!

Glad to hear things are working for you now.

Who knows. I’d rather MASK so that if someone saves the domain it will actually save my domain, but this will do. Many people use Chrome and seeing that security error would likely scare some away.

I noticed that I was not receiving a security error on Internet Explorer, but both Edge and Chrome were displaying the same error (of course Edge is Chrome, essentially.)

  • Interestingly enough, bookmarking is one reason to not use masking: if someone wants to bookmark a specific page on your site so they can read it later, or if they want to share an article you’ve written, the link they get will be only your domain name rather than a direct link to the item they were thinking of. Also, while search engines typically do a fine job of figuring out the site is not really on the domain you’ve forwarded there, they end up bookmarking all of the non-custom domain links for you. So if you worked on your SEO so that you could be found more easily, people would see the free wordpress.com address in the search results, not your domain.

Mapping (which comes with our Personal managed hosting plan) would let the domain work properly, with SSL and everything, so we do recommend that if you’re able.

    Thank you for the information.
