Going Back to classic editor & Disable self pingback

  • Unknown's avatar

    Good evening,
I’ve recently started to have the two following issues on my blog (that are totally unrelated):

    1. Since a few weeks, I noticed that I started getting notification for linking my own articles. It wasn’t the case before, I used to receive only external mentions from fellow bloggers but not my own. Now, when, for instance, every time I edit the summary, I receive a hundredish of notifications. Can you explain to me how I can fix this and disable self pingback while keeping those of other bloggers, the way it used to be?

    2. For months if not years I’ve always had a message asking me if I wanted to change to new editor, and I always answered ‘no’. Just now, going to editor wanting to write a new article, I mistakenly clicked on the wrong button. I’m now on the Gutenberg editor and that’s not something I wanted, therefore, I would like to go back to the classic editor. Could you help me?

    Thank in advance,
    Laurie

  • Hi Laurie,

    1. Since a few weeks, I noticed that I started getting notification for linking my own articles. It wasn’t the case before, I used to receive only external mentions from fellow bloggers but not my own.

    You’re referring to pingbacks.

Self-pings are expected, and should always happen when you link internally to another post on the same site. The only time self-pings don’t happen is if you use the wp.me shortlink, rather than the full post URL.

If you’ve been using the full post URL and that didn’t trigger pingbacks, that’s actually a bug.

Now, when, for instance, every time I edit the summary, I receive a hundredish of notifications.

What exactly are you editing? Pingbacks should only happen when a link is first included in a post, and subsequent edits to the post should not generate pings. However, if something had been preventing pingbacks on your site from working as expected, it’s possible they’ve been queuing up, and are now getting triggered as you edit those posts later.

Can you explain to me how I can fix this and disable self pingback while keeping those of other bloggers, the way it used to be?

To avoid self-pings, use the shortlink instead. You can find that in the action bar that appears bottom-right on your site:

The classic editor in My Sites is being permanently removed from WordPress.com. If you haven’t received an email about it yet, you should within the next day or two. As a result, it is no longer possible to switch back to the classic editor once you switch to blocks.

But you can still use the classic editor by creating or editing posts from the posts list in WP-Admin at https://ireadbetweentheskylines.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php
