going crazy with scan size
-
Please advise. When I upload a scan and send it to the editing portion of the post-writing page, it sends it huge until I bring the resolution down almost into double digits. If I try to resize it there on the editor it looks crappy:

If I use a photo I can resize it and it looks clear:

I’ve probably spent five hours yesterday and today screwing around with this and I can’t get it to work. I’d like to scan a magazine page and have it fit to the width of my blog column, preferably without having it look like a smudge.
Help?

Change the size of the scan before you upload it. Scans tend to scan full-size at incredible resolution, and you don’t need that. See if it gives you the option to “Save for web” or something like that. That will give you a managable size. Otherwise, just change the size yourself to something no more than 500 pixels across (that’s larger than any of the columns in any of the templates) and upload that version.
A magazine page is about 8.5 by 11 inches. To get that to display on your blog, you’d have to shrink it by three-quarters. It will always look messy, because they’re designed to display at full-size. Why not use clikckable thumbnails which expand to full-size?

Steve, I use the same theme as you (Contempt).
The key is to make sure your photos have a maximum width of 440 Pixels.
Also, try to make the file size as light as possible. Experiment with JPG and GIF settings. PhotoShop has a great “Save for Web” feature in the file menu that makes this really easy.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve tried saving the scans at much lower resolution, and as I said, until I set them at something like 80×120 or so, they still blow up to larger than the screen. I’m just using Microsoft Office Picture Manager, which also has “save for web” settings.

I have a graphics program which APPEARS to do this, but once the images are loaded I see that they’re only normal size. I don’t know what causes that, but it could be the same problem.
What kind of file are you saving them as? JPEG, GIF, etc?

Rain, maybe the image within the program isn’t set to display at 100%. I have the same issue with abobe reader.

I’m saving them as JPEGs, scanning from the Lexmark utility included with my printer. I don’t have any better photo editing programs than what comes with MS Office.

And raincoaster, why would a magazine page shrunk by 3/4 size look messy as opposed to just small? As I shrink it, it seems to get blurry, which puzzles me.

Look at your kb sizes. The foot picture is 600kb while the magaize article is only about 20kb.
The best thing to do is to use a thumbnail for the post and link to the full size image. Do remember that you’ll making folks download that 600kb image. That’s at leaat 30 seconds for someone on dialup.
