Will our followers need to login in to make a comment?
Will we be able to add more pages?
Can we customize the back drop with our own photos?

    WP.com: Yes

    Have a look at https://wordpress.com/pricing/
I don’t think visitors will notice much immediate difference if you upgrade apart from the lack of ads which you’re subject to with a free plan. How easy/difficult you make it for people to comment in your settings is not any different for a free plan or higher.
You can have as many pages as you want even with a free plan (within reason). Hundreds of pages can make menus unwieldly and make navigation for visitors difficult. Background images may or may not be available depending on which theme you choose. The Premium plan does offer a few more themes than the free plan.

  • Thanks @themagicrobot

To address the domain question, if you upgrade to add your own domain, we’ll add a 301 redirect to the free address. That way any links or SEO that point to the old URL will be automatically redirected to the new address. And the 301 part of it ensures search engines know to update their links.

Let us know if you have questions on that!
