Going Premium – Blog or Blogs
-
I have two self-hosted blogs installed on one domain in different subfolders (mydomain.com/selfhost1 and mydomain.com/selfhost2). I’m thinking about going premium because I’m not entirely happy with all the fidgeting that I need to do to keep my blogs’ wordpress core up to date on my current pro. If I get a premium account and transfer my domain name, can I have multiple blogs appear under that domain or am I limited to one premium blog per premium account (with others remaining wordpress.com blogs)?

The upgrade applies to a single blog only. It does not apply to an account. It does not include any premium themes. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable Premium bundle http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/

Domains: Important Notes Before Upgrading
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgradingIn order to map to a domain URL one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
All that changes when you are domain mapping is the URL and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is. What domain mapping does its create a seamless transfer between the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs to the new domain URLs no matter where they are on the internet. Visitors who click the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly redirected to the exact same content under the new domain URLs.

Can I add something here? Every WordPressdotcom site comes with a single, dynamically updating “blog” page and as many static pages as you could possibly need.
Taking a quick look at your current site (the one linked to your username) I wonder if you really need two separate sites or two separate blogs.
You could set up one site with a static front page, like you have now, and then create two sets of subpages for each section. When you want to update the blog page with news for each section, you could add a category tag and then link to each specific category in that section.
Let us know if you want more info on that.

Of course, tt. :)
In spite of what I suggested in my first reply, it does make me wonder how the new upgrades arrangement would handle buying Premium for a custom domain with other upgrades and then buy only domain mapping for a subdomain (or vice versa) in case the OP wanted to go that way.
But I guess we’ll wait to hear from the OP before tagging it for Staff. :D

Thanks for your response @timethief and @justjennifer. My self-hosted blogs are two very distinct sites, one that is related to dance and another that is professional. Both have their own themes, designs and subdomains. I actually have a HTML splash page at the main address that directs visitors to the two sites. It doesn’t sound like that would be doable here. Sorry to trouble you. Thanks for your help.

@cfasca – you’re welcome and no trouble. If you’d like to dive into this a little deeper and let us know what “not entirely happy with all the fidgeting that I need to do to keep my blogs’ wordpress core up to date on my current pro” exactly means, I think it’s possible to set up what you need here.
The only thing you can’t really do by your above description is use 2 separate themes on a single site. You can, however, set up two separate sites and connect them using a Custom Menu. One site could reside on a subdomain. If this interests you, feel free to add the MODLOOK tag to the forum sidebar for Staff attention and clarification about costs.
Regardless of which way you choose to go, best wishes from me.

I think the issue is not a WordPress, but my provider. Admittedly I haven’t dove into it too deeply. Basically, I have two problems. 1) I can never do automatic updates. I try, but I get a blank screen or one that says WordPress Update at the top, but nothing else. So I need to download the core files and update them manually, which doesn’t take a long time, but usually gets put off. But I think that relates to my provider’s setup because 2) My admin page is not my domain name, but abcpages.abcpages.com/~usernumber/mysubdomain/wp-login.php. It is probably the reason why I can’t preview templates. So I don’t think it is a WordPress issue, which is why I didn’t raise it in the forum.

Just to clarify, when a site is hosted on WordPressdotcom, where we are, we don’t need to handle any kind of updates on the backend and often are the surprised beta testers for new features being introduced to the next version of the standalone WP software. For the full run-down of the differences between WordPressdotcom and standalone WP, you may want to read this Support document: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Since these are the support forums for sites hosted by WordPressdotcom, we can only direct you to the forums for sites using the standalone WP software for assistance with the problems you described above. Those forums are found at https://wordpress.org/support If you don’t have a username there, you can register one on that page.
Again, best wishes.

I’m sorry. I was responding to your request to explain what “not entirely happy” meant. I’m really interested in your suggestion about setting up separate sites with a custom menu, one existing on a subdomain. Actually, that might be ideal having one site be the main and another be a subdomain. I’ve added the MODLOOK tag to this forum topic. Thanks!

Hi @cfasca
Actually, that might be ideal having one site be the main and another be a subdomain.
Great, so you’d be using two different accounts, and mapping a domain to one and its subdomain to the other? We’d be happy to help set that up. I’d recommend creating the sites here first and getting their content moved in, then we can work on configuring the domains.
Just as another suggestion, you might consider using Jetpack Manage to take care of the two sites at once.
Also, I should clarify, at this point you won’t be able to transfer the domain name here, but you can certainly keep its registration where it is, and point it to our nameservers.
