Going round in cicles

I last used, very successfully, WordPress back in 2019 and became quite proficient. Now, returning to it to develop a new site for our local council it’s driving me demented. The block editor fights me at every turn – I cannot easily format text, set indentations or copy/paste. The routine to add pages to the menu is just absurd . To top it all the preview site looks NOTHING like the page I have painstakingly designed over several hours. My carefully aligned text is randomly either aligned tight to the left or in the centre – both wrong. I cannot believe just how bad WordPress has become and am seriously thinking of ditching all my previous experience (which appears to count for zilch anyway) and trying something else. Yes I’ve watch numerous tutorials but they bear little in common to what I see on screen. Why, for example do I have to bring up the Next Steps page in order to access the dashboard and why does the Typography drop down window remain on screen covering up the options forcing me to click away before being able to change any setting. The whole thing is a mess. Why, oh why, did they get rid of the wonderful classic editor and replace with the Blockhead Editor? Rant over.
Seriously though is there a conversion tutorial out there for those of us who just want to crack on and design a website without going through an obstacle course to do every single thing?

Hey there, sorry you’ve had a rough time of this. If you want to read the wherefores and whys of all this, it’s all at make.wordpress.org — you can read the discussions, the design decisions, and more. You can read how they’re trying to make the navigation builder easier too, and how they are still working on it. It’s open-source software and contributors are welcome; I’d just recommend reading as much as you can to start.

Have you thought about jumping into one of the webinars, or watching a recording? Those tend to have the latest info, and my colleagues are great at showing off what blocks can do for you. They also regularly interact with users to understand what folks are running into and what they’re hoping for. I think you’ll find them helpful.
For the problems you described above, we can give more specific answers if you want to share more context for each issue: what page are you working on? Got a screenshot of what you want vs what you’re getting? We can go from there. Also, generally we recommend one topic per thread, and using a clear title, etc, as outlined in the community standards. That helps the community help you faster.
