Going to self hosting, need tips and advice

I’m going to self host thru HostGator and they will do the transfer. But before I do, I have basic questions.

    1) Will my theme, Spectrum, transfer ok – and will it work and look the same

    2) Longer goal is to have multiple menus (trying to coordinate/organize 3-4 different topics on one blog) on same blog site and to advertise….if Spectrum will not support this – what themes might be similar that would be more appropriate

    3) Any tips that I can learn from others who have already done a migration – I’m worried about making bad decisions out of pure lack of experience. Using wordpress has been easy, not sure what to expect with going to a selfhosting situation but it seems the only way to be able to advertise.

    Thanks, all.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.

This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are now using: http://wordpress.org/support/

Themes work different at .ORG than there.

Have you read this entry? moving a blog

    (1) No the software is different and the themes are coded to run on either wp.com or wp.org – they are not transferable

    (2) There are over 160 themes here at WordPress.com and almost all support custom menus.

To locate theme for WordPress. org installs see here > http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

    (3)

Using wordpress has been easy, not sure what to expect with going to a selfhosting situation but it seems the only way to be able to advertise.

If you are an experienced WordPress.com software user, and have the skill sets required to set up and manage your own self hosted WordPress.org install then the instructions for making the move are easy to follow. But if you are not skilled at WordPress.com blogging, and also lack the skill sets required to self host your own WordPress.org install then acquiring those skills first is recommended.

You will not get the hand holding support that you get on this wp.com forum. You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. For example: If you install a theme or a plugin that negatively affects your blog, then you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it.

For self-hosting figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on storage and bandwidth requirements.

Most bloggers I know that take this route to make money via advertising do not make up for their hosting and domain registration costs, and with literally millions of people downloading and installing Adblock plus on their Firefox browsers each month, fewer and fewer people are seeing ads.

I already bought a year at Hostgator – but I am re-thinking, hoping to get my money back.

I def don’t have skill set and thinking maybe I should first see what kind of following I get. I do think eventually I can make money and just thought not having to “redo” things would be best. Maybe not!

In tandem with blog, I’ll be free-lance article writing and was hoping between the two – to get quicker upstart, and hence, eventual revenue stream.

Thank you for good points – I may need to just stick around here for a while – it is fantastic….and I’m still in the learning curve.

I switched my blog name – it is:

    http://www.candidlycanine.wordpress.com

Any advice to a newbie? I have about 3 weeks into so far…but going in for a rewrite and design tweak, if I stay on word press. I’m still trying to figure out how to get rid of the old willowsworldview that is showing up on this forum….

If you think you might move then get a domain name and map it to your blog so your visitors will think of the personal domain name so if you do move the address will not change.

Many writers use their blog to showcase their work for potential clients and never sell anything but their skills on the blog.

Yes, good idea….I cancelled self hosting – and purchased the wordpress bundle instead. Think I best stay right here for now – but showcasing work as marketing for paying projects is great idea. Thanks.

    PS
This CSS looks intimidating….I’ll probably be back with more questions in future….don’t even have my big toe in the water yet – as it relates to custom design and the frightening html code.
