Good uploaded images look bad.

We’re building a presence for my sister’s art so the images are the KEY element of the site. However, every JPG I’ve uploaded that looks great on the computer, looks soft and distinctly darker on WordPress.

We’re still in the process of building and want to reserve a domain once we get a good these that works the way we want, and also set up purchasing. But if we can’t get WordPress to display the images as good as we’re uploading them, we’ll have to start over again elsewhere.

We’re using the WP Cubic theme. Images uploaded at 1500 pixels across.
They are only displayed at 840 pixels across.
Currently set to Large resolution, because nothing we do in the theme allows us to use the full 1500 pixel width of the images. Even manually typing that into the width is ignored by the theme.

I do see that setting the image to Full Size in the Resolution setting does improve image quality a bit, when I size down the image on my desktop to the same size as the displayed image, (downrez to the 840px display) it looks noticeably better, and brighter.

There is zero reason for the displayed images “Large” should be darker. Why would it change the brightness of a downrezzed image? No other image app I have does that.

Second, the 840 pixel display resolution, from a “Large” source should look way better than it does, unless WordPress’ “large” is 300px across, and then its being stretched out to 840 px across for the web page.

When I DL the displayed image and open it in my image app, it says 768 px across, for a 840px image. So you are undersampling the “large” image for am 840px display. Why?
And why does the brightness shift? That’s really bad image processing if you change the colorspace/brightness of every image processed.

I’m going to try and upload a side by side on my desktop showing the wordpress image on the left, and my image that I’m uploading on the right- sized to the WordPress display size.
But I expect the image compression WordPress is using will make the image suck to the point where you won’t be able to see a difference. Which is the point. But if you do, the right image will be brighter, and sharper than that same exact file uploaded to, and displayed by WordPress.
WordPress should faithfully reproduce both the brightness, and the clarity of the uploaded images at every display size.

  • Hi there!

There is indeed some level of compression and optimization happening automatically as a way to enable faster loading speeds.

That said, you may choose to experiment by deactivating the optimization features, this is available on the Business and Commerce plans.

You can also check our guide about the topic here: Troubleshooting Blurry Images.

You can also explore uploading the images to an image hosting platform then embedding it on the site, as explained here: Embed Content From Other Platforms

An image can be compressed and optimized without making it darker and blurrier.
I do this when exporting all the time. I can slide the slider to more compression, or make it Progressive so it loads quickly and gets sharper, and I can do both without making it darker and blurrier.

So WordPress really needs to change its image processing to not ruin photos.
Because both of the stated goals can be done without making the images darker or blurrier, yet WordPress recompression makes my images darker and blurrier.

Please don’t tell me this is deliberate – to force people to the 4th and 5th paid tiers, just under Enterprise plan, as the ONLY way to not have WordPress NOT just ruin user images. Because that is absolutely the perfect way to ensure I NEVER give WordPress any money for this portfolio site.

“Jetpack automatically compresses images uploaded to the CDN to ensure they load quickly. In most cases, this is a good thing because images can usually be sized down considerably without any noticeable difference in quality. However, this can sometimes cause blurry or poor-quality images,”

Good thing I’m not using Jetpack.

“If you’ve recently switched your site’s theme and noticed that all images uploaded on the new theme look good, but the older ones uploaded on the previous theme appear blurry, you can re-upload the older images on the new theme to get them to display correctly.”

It’s blurry with new uploads at double the display resolution.

“Occasionally, installing a new plugin on your site might cause your images to appear blurry. Updating an existing plugin can also introduce conflicts that may affect your images.”

    No plugins.

  • I tried to identify the image in question, but I see it’s showing a fair amount of detail even on the resized/compressed version:

Can you try and upload the ignorantbliss-1.jpg file to an image-sharing platform that doesn’t compress it then share a link to it here so I can compare the two versions more effectively?
Many of the platforms listed here are a good fit.
