Goodreads widget seemingly doesn’t exist anymore?

I am trying to write book reviews and analysis on my blog, so obviously I want to link my currently reading shelf to the home page. On my old wordpress website it was easy-peasy to add the goodreads widget, but now that I must use the site editor for the theme of this site the goodreads widget seems to be non-existant. I have searched every keyword I could think of, looked over forums and youtube tutorials, and even tried using goodreads’ widget from their site. My brother in IT said that he couldn’t help in the code editor because, quote, “wordpress.com uses a very strange version of html.”

I am extremely frustrated now as I paid for the personal plan today and if the literal only widget I want won’t work I feel like I’ve completely wasted my money. Please make the site editor easier to navigate or add all the tools to it. I’m really hoping I just missed something, but it seems like you deleted content I decided to pay for this time around.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, try following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/goodreads-widget/

If you have other questions or need more help, please post back here.

Apparently the Goodreads widget does not work on themes that use Full Site Editing, which Bitacora does. Please see this earlier forum discussion. https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/html-not-working-11/

What you can do is add your Goodreads link to the social media icons in the sidebar. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/social-icons-block/

Thank you very much for your reply. If I wasn’t already attached to my theme I would switch it but I do like it a lot.
I sort of found a way to get the widget to work. It was very tedious but I memorized the code that was appearing in front of and behind the widget and then removed it line by line while previewing it to make sure it worked. I do not think it will automatically update anymore but I may be wrong and I will figure something out at that time.

Looks like it’s working well! ♥

  • Hi! Just popping in to take a look — it does indeed look like you’ve pasted the “static HTML” version of the Goodreads widget. That won’t auto-update, so you’ll want to replace the HTML periodically. I’ll note a request for an updated Goodreads widget, though. Thanks!

Yes, sort of. I am not familiar with html or coding at all so what I did was paste the widget from goodreads that was supposed to auto update and then I removed all the bits that were showing up as code instead of like the border and background that are supposed to be there. It no longer “works” but hopefully the old wordpress widget gets put into the site editor soon and I won’t have to paste it and edit the lines every day or two.

  • Hey there,

    It no longer “works”

Hmm, I wonder if some code was removed inadvertently.

Does this work, if these edits aren’t made?

Hey @aleone89 The widget available from Goodreads includes both inline styles and javascript. Removing the javascript means the widget won’t automatically update with changes made on Goodreads.

The Legacy Goodreads widget works great on classic themes or themes that support a widgetized footer or sidebar. It would be fantastic to get a working Goodreads widget/block for FSE themes!

No. The part that works is just the photos etc. Any left over code just shows up as a paragraph or two of code surrounding the books, and the only way to get that to not happen is to remove it. I have checked and rechecked what I copy-pasted multiple times and I am certain it does not work at all regardless of whether the code is left in or not because those codes simply do not function. So for now I settled on having the images and updating it manually. I had my IT brother look at it again and he said something about wordpress not recognizing the html and putting it as a paragraph with the <p> things at the end I think.

I apologize @justjennifer I didn’t see that you had already replied.

    No worries, @motherbirdmadeline It’s all good. 😊

  • I just wanted to add here that while it’s not possible to use the legacy Goodreads widget on new FSE sites, but we have asked our devs to look into the possibility of adding a Goodreads block. I don’t have a timeline if/for when that would be implemented so I would recommend @justjennifer’s workaround for now. Thanks!
