Google Ads Appearing on My Site

I am aware of the policy where WordPress may place ads on your site should they desire but it was my understanding that was only to happen when people find your blog through a search engine inquiry. Lately I’ve had multiple regular readers reporting the appearance of ads on my site when they directly enter the url or follow a link posted on my Twitter. Ads are something I feel passionate about (I have no interest in them whatsoever) which is one of the primary reasons why I enjoy WordPress so much. Is anybody aware of a change of policy in their placement of ads? I’ve already contacted support but was curious if anybody else was having similar issues as well. I’m aware of the no ad upgrade but it’s pricey, especially considering the other ones I regularly pay for and the fact that I make zero money from my blog. I have no problem when they are put up on the rare occasion from search engine hits only, but I’m not too happy they’re appearing for my regular readers now as well. If anybody has any light to shed, it’s appreciated. :)

This is not a wordpress.com support issue per say and volunteers answering support questions cannot help you with it. Automattic is the corporation that owns wordpress.com and their corporate policy is to run occasional advertising on our blogs. You have already contacted Staff so if you are focused on finding a solution to your discomfort with corporate policy then I can present three options:
    (1) The no ads upgrade is not expensive. It’s amounts to the expenditure of $30 per year (25 cents per day) http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

    (2) Exporting the contents of your blog out and moving onto another blogging platform that has no advertising is quite easily done.

    (3) Accepting the situation as is, is also an option.

OOPS! I forgot to mention the most obvious solution of all for you and your readers.

    (4) I use a Firefox browser with AdBlock Plus. It’s a free download. Like the 47% of others surfing the internet, I never – ever see ads.

I happily use the same browser and add-on. I don’t know why everybody doesn’t honestly!

Thanks for listing out the options. You are right, $30 a year isn’t that much but considering this is a hobby that does not see any monetary returns, I struggle with putting more money into it. It seems to add up quickly.

I’ll wait to see what support says about their current stance. The only policy information I could find was over a year old so I’m curious if it changed. A strange series of flukes I am ok with. A change in how they do things would require the action of one of the four steps you listed. And definitely not the third one, LOL … :)

There is no formal published policy about when ads are displayed, other than to say that they are only shown to a small percentage of visitors. We try not to bother regular users with them.
