google ads not appearing on the text widget box in my website

I have tried a number of times and my google ads do not appear in the text boxes I copied and pasted them into on my website. There is a blank grey box and this underneath it: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Am I doing something wrong? I have made sure javascript is enabled on my browser and that the code is correct.
