Google Adsense Ads

I’ve recently thought about upgrading my site to use Custom CSS…but before I do I wanted to know if I will have the ability to put Google Adsense Ads on my website. I know that you cannot do that without the CSS upgrade…and I didn’t see anything on the FAQ about it.
Any help regarding this issue will be most appreciated.

No, you can’t. The ONLY upgrade that allows paid advertising is the VIP upgrade, which costs several hundred a month if you even qualify in the first place.

wow… really.
right now I have a wordpress setup on my own self-hosted domain. to avoid the agony of having to keep on patching and updating my wordpress install, I was considering moving to wordpress.com. to move the four blogs on my current domain, I’d be looking at $10/year for domain redirection x4, plus $15/year for custom CSS x4, that works out to $100 a year. I could afford that if I could keep my Google ads (which earn me maybe $150 a year or so), but not if I have to give up Google ads.
i can’t understand who can afford all these add-ons without the means to add low-level monitization. i guess wordpress understandably doesn’t want to be hosting piles of spam blogs, but still, what about us little bloggers who use a bit of advertising to pay for the hosting and whatnot?

Question. I well aware that we’re not allowed to put ads on our blogs now but what about this paragraph that’s way way down on the bottome of the ‘features’ page? Does anyone know how long it’s been there?

It’s been there quite some time. The Google text ads appear on some blogs and the upgrade to turn them off or show your own are not available.

Hmm, that’s kind of misleading to prospective customers. I say ‘customer’s because although WordPress.com is free many people pay to upgrade…so that makes us customers. If it means the VIP thing then it should say that.

So you have to be a trust fund baby, independently wealthy and blogging for the heck of it to use wordpress? I just wanted to add an Amazon search box because I review books. Guess I’ll have to move my blog to blogger.com. Who can afford to keep a blog going without ads??!

If you review books on amazon you can still be on WordPress. If you read the TOS, it says this:
Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (”Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). To be clear, examples like people writing original book or movie reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category.
I.e. you can still use direct product links to amazon.com -
Who can afford to keep a blog going without ads??!
@weddingsoon-I must not understand what you mean. WordPress.com is a FREE blogging service. Other than your valuable time, what exactly can you not afford about it?

If reviewing books and linking to Amazon is your retirement plan, you’d be better off panhandling. I make a living from blogs, but that wouldn’t be my choice of most effective route to riches.

In the FAQ, it said that wordpress was thinking about adding a feature to display ads. Is this feature still being considered and, if so, what time range are we looking at?

Frankly speaking, I for my part hope they never add AdSense. A wide range of customizable pre-scripted widgets would be a lot more attractive to me than AdSense.
And reading this, I understand why WordPress may be hesitant to put on AdSense:
