Google Analytics
-
Hi there
I have a blog hosted on WordPress.com. I wanted to install a Tracking ID from Google Analytics. In doing so ive discovered that i cant, as only wordpress.org supports plugins like this. I really just wanted to do this to monitor traffic to my site, which is not used for any e-commerce, but mostly as a virtual shopfront for my consultancy business and the occasional content update. so im not sure if its worth the hassle of me migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.
I note that wordpress.com itself offers a modicum of analytics. Is Google Analytics going to give me much extra? Also – i cant seem to switch off the ability for visitors to my blogs to make comments on my pages. any tips?
thanks!

Hi Russell,
Your investigations are correct. While we don’t allow Google Analytics on WordPress.com we do offer our own stats.
You can read more about what our stats measure here, and I think you’ll find that it’s not everything Google Analytics offers, it meets most people’s needs to monitor general trends of traffic:
Some folks are just already used to the tools at Google Analytics and prefer to stay with them. I find it to be a personal preference more than anything.
Another tool you can use is Google Webmaster Tools, which contains some of the same functions as Google Analytics. Learn how to verify your site with GWT here:

Enabling and Disabling comments are controlled in two places:
- Change the default setting for whenever you create new Pages or Posts in your Discussion Settings:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
- For Pages and Posts you’ve already created, you’ll need to disable the comments by editing then updating them, not just the change in the Discussion Settings:
Let me know if those guides help, or if you need more specific step-by-step. :)

Hi Alex
thanks for your guidance.
The advice was useful, as were the steps to manage discussion and comments, so thank you
