  how to install google analytics. how do i “upload” the header/footer thing into my directory?

  There is no upgrade aside from your blog being accepted into VIP hosting http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ that allows you to run Google Analytics.

  This is a multi-user blogging platform. Our blogs share a common architecture. We bloggers cannot access metadata on free hosted WordPress.com blogs and install any tracking code, we have no FTP access and we cannot install plugins. Stats >
  Note we cannot install Google Analytics.

  There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot upload anything into the header or footer areas. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
