There is no upgrade aside from your blog being accepted into VIP hosting http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ that allows you to run Google Analytics.
This is a multi-user blogging platform. Our blogs share a common architecture. We bloggers cannot access metadata on free hosted WordPress.com blogs and install any tracking code, we have no FTP access and we cannot install plugins. Stats >

You can read about the stats program we have here
You can use non-Javascript third party stats programs scroll down to “visitor tracking” here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/popular-posts/What attracts search engines is unique content the cannot be found anywhere else on the internet. Keep publishing original content frequently because it can take weeks before indexing will happen.
The process we use for verifying free hosted WordPress.com blogs with search engines is found here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
Note: Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don’t feel panicky about this please.
WordPress.com provides the search engines with site maps. We bloggers do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/
