Google apps plus custom DNS
-
My domain sablosky.com is registered with Network Solutions. I want it to use it for email with Google Apps; and I also want my WordPress page, sablosky.wordpress.com to live at http://sablosky.com. At my Advanced Domain Settings page at Network Solutions, I set the MX records to ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM etc. as advised by the Google Apps help pages. Then I set the A records to 72.233.69.14, 76.74.159.137, and 64.34.177.159 as advised somewhere on these WordPress support pages. At this point Google Apps is working fine, but sablosky.wordpress.com and sablosky.com are both inaccessible.
Now when I go to my Store > Domains page it tells me “Your nameservers need to be set to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and NS2.WORDPRESS.COM for these DNS records to work.” But I can’t change the top-level nameservers because that will kill my email. I don’t know what to try next.

Hi there,
You’ll need to change your name servers to:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comAnd follow the instructions here:
http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/Once you do so, you can add the MX records for your email, according to the instructions at this page:
http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/Don’t hesitate to contact us again if you need anymore help. :-)

At the Network Solutions site, I cannot use the WordPress name servers because when I do that I cannot change the MX records. The reason is that changing MX records is called Advanced DNS Settings, and when you turn on Advanced DNS Settings the top-level name servers are set to Network Solutions addresses (currently ns25.worldnic.com and ns26.worldnic.com). Somewhere on the WordPress help pages it said I could use IP addresses instead, (72.233.69.14, 76.74.159.137, and 64.34.177.159) and a Network Solutions advisor told me to put them in the A records, but that is not working.

You’ll need to change your nameservers to map your domain here, we cannot provide any other options.
Once your nameservers are pointed here, you can set your MX records through our Custom DNS panel: http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

Oh — so you’re saying that if I set the name servers to ns1.wordpress.com etc., my (Google Apps) email will stop working, but then I can go to the Custom DNS panel and put the MX records in there and the email will be working again. Is that correct?

Yes. Once you map your domain to WordPress.com, you can then update your MX records via your Store -> Domains page.
