How can I use google data highlighter tool on my wordpress site? when I try it comes up with this message:
“The canonical URL for this page is outside http://www.kabbage.co.uk.”
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there – since WordPress.com redirects your site from http://www.kabbage.co.uk to http://kabbage.co.uk you’ll first need to make sure your site is verified with Google Webmaster tools through the URL http://kabbage.co.uk.
More about Webmaster Tools.

Hi there – I’ve gone to the Google page and have no idea how to do the verifcation thing. I’m sorry but I am not IT-literate at all so wouldn’t have a clue how to upload the verification file to my WordPress site…
Please can you advise?
Thanks so much,
Kabir

Hi there – with WordPress.com you don’t need to upload the verification file. All you need to do is head over to Tools > Available Tools in your dashboard:
https://kabbageuk.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php
Scroll down to the section called “Website Verification Services” – and enter the code Google supplies in the field next to “Google Webmaster Tools.”
It looks like you already managed to do that, so kudos to you!

Hi Kathryn – unfortunately, though, the google verification code refers to my site as http://www.kabbage.co.uk and I need to change that to http://kabbage.co.uk in order to use the DATA HIGHLIGHT tool – well, that’s my understanding – do you concur?
-
If you originally generated the verification code for Google Webmaster tools for the domain http://www.kabbage.co.uk, then you’ll need to log back into your Google account and generate a new code for kabbage.co.uk.
Once that’s done, return to the Tools area of your WordPress.com site and replace the old code currently there with the new one.

Hi I used the new verification code but for some reason it said “404 page not found” on my blog, and the Google Verification section consequently couldn’t verify..?
-
Would it be possible to upload a screenshot of where you saw a 404 error to help in troubleshooting?
Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/
You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library and then post a link so I can see it.
Thanks.

Hi there – it looks you copy-pasted the file name of the verification file that Google has supplied.
What you need to do instead is find the line of code that Google gives you, which looks something like this:
<meta name='google-site-verification' content='dBw5CvburAxi537Rp9qi5uG2174Vb6JwHwIRwPSLIK8'>Then take the part in between the single quotes after the word “content” – i.e. in the example here, that would be this part:
dBw5CvburAxi537Rp9qi5uG2174Vb6JwHwIRwPSLIK8
And paste that into the text box where you currently have pasted the file name ending in .html. Each verification code is unique so yours will be different than the one above – be sure to copy-paste it directly into the text box to be sure it works correctly.
Just let me know if you need further help.

I understand what you mean, but the google verification code is the one I copy and pasted – I can’t see anywhere a string of code such as the example you gave? If it stored in a different place?
-
When you’re in your Google Webmaster Tools account, you’ll need to select the “meta tag” or HTML verification method in order to get the right code.
Here are Google’s instructions on how to get to the right place:
-
Hi – well, I managed to locate the correct HTML tag, and entered it accordingly:
…but, the same error message appeared in the Google Webmaster section:
-
Hi there – I re-saved your verification code on this page:
https://kabbageuk.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php
…and didn’t get any error message.
Have you gone into your Google Webmaster Tools account over at Google.com to see if your site is showing as verified now?
-
Thank you so much – and sorry for being so dizzy! Yes, it works very well now!
Best wishes,
Kabir x
