Google Discover data

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

I was just wondering what title Google takes from the WordPress editor (CMS) to use in their mobile Discover feed?

I have individually filled out site titles, RSS, NewsNow, MSN, Meta and Open Graph but cannot work out which one is used.

Anyone that can help with this and the reasons behind it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

I can’t give an authoritative answer, however, it seems that Google Discover works quite similarly to Google Search in that it automatically looks for content.

I couldn’t find any evidence that Google Discover seems to require any inputting of the title. Again, just more references that this is done automatically, and that a website owner should take good care to write descriptive <title> elements.

I checked your website HTML, and your <title> element looks good. This is created by the CMS in WordPress.com.

So in conclusion, it seems like there are no extra steps to be taken on your end.

    Hope that was helpful.

So are you saying that this is out of my control essentially?

    Hi,

I’m saying that it appears that the only way to change the title in Google Discover is to change the site and pages title in the WordPress CMS. If you’re happy with the site and page titles in the WordPress CMS, then you don’t have to do any other additional steps for Google Discover.

    To answer your original question:

I was just wondering what title Google takes from the WordPress editor (CMS) to use in their mobile Discover feed?

It seems that Google takes the title from the WordPress CMS.

You can change the site title by going to “Settings”, “General”, and under “General Settings” changing the “Site title” and pressing “Save settings”.

    I hope that helps :)

    Hi,

Think maybe you are unintentionally misunderstanding my question.

WordPress CMS gives me four titles to use, but I am not sure what title is used.

Those titles on the WP CMS are “Site”, “RSS”, “Meta” and “OG” title – I just need to know which one Google uses for Discover, if able?

    Thanks,

    Hi Nathan,

Sorry for the late reply, and sorry for any unintentional misunderstandings.

I can’t find the settings you listed on my WordPress CMS. Where do you find these settings?

    Are you using a plugin?

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Hi mate,

So the titles concerned are the site title, which is self-explanatory. We have RSS and MSN title plug-ins that enables us to have referring links to bolster SEO.

Furthermore, in the ‘Post SEO Settings’, we have three tabs. ‘General’, ‘Social’ and ‘Visibility’. We have two further title options in the form of ‘Meta Title’ and Open Graph Title’. In total, we are using five different titles for the same article, if that makes sense?

I just need to narrow down if there is a specific title in the WordPress CMS that Google uses for it’s Discover feed, or whether it’s completely at random.

    Thanks again,

    Nathan

    Hey @linleyuk,
Google discover uses your post title to show in the discover feed.
Also, if someone follows your website on google discover it will look for the RSS or Atom feed. If it can’t find them, it’ll try to make the feed on its own.

    Hi mate,

Just to clarify, the title on the web page itself is the one that Discover uses? Anyone following my website could potentially receive a slightly varied version of the title if different to the site title?

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    Hey Nathan,
Yes, the title and the description are used mostly.

    <title>Blog post</title> for title and <meta name="description" content="........" for the description.

However, google can sometimes add in their own titles and description. As for images, it uses either the featured image, embedded videos, or images in posts. It’s just picks the one the discover ai thinks it the most suited one. We have little control over what gets shown and what doesn’t. We should focus on posting high quality, well researched content. I hope this helped.

Fantastic, got there in the end!

Thank you so much for this!

  • Hi Nathan,

Just thought I’d mention that if you’d like more control over this, our Pro plan includes access to more granular SEO settings for your site:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/seo-tools/

The Pro plan also allows you to use a plugin like Yoast SEO which would give you complete control over what’s used as the meta tags for your site.
